Only US citizens or legal permanent residents are allowed to enlist in the US military. And serving is a privilege, NOT a punishment!

It worked in the civil war so it would work here also. If they are here for a better life as some claim, then they would not pass up the opportunity to became a legal citizen after they have earned it.
As far as the language barrier, they work here don't they and our schools have been forced to adopt also, so it can work. If they refuse, then I believe we should set up our jails to have mandatory work programs, were they work to pay for their jail stay and have to work until they have paid for their deportation costs. I say deport the children and wife, but arrest the husband and make him work for all costs associated with the deportation of his family, then they will think twice about coming here illegally.
Our volunteer army has served this country proud, and would like to come home and stay with their family instead of repeating tours of duty one after another. They need a much earned break, and even it is not given, the draft may be enacted, so lets not forget how important they are. If illegals truly want the be an American, then give them an opportunity to earn that right, as our ancestors have done for us. Freedom is not free, it has be paid by the blood of our ancestors.

I cannot imagine how having a military composed of persons who do not obey the laws of the country could possibly be a good idea. If you do not trust someone enough to let them live in the country unarmed, do you really want them on the frontlines of a war, carrying nuclear weapons, or entrusted with the survival of the country?

No, its a dishonor to the men and women who have chosen to serve. If a person wants to pitch in and show love for our country, they should do it by respecting our laws & following the immigration processes. This is a nation of laws, and laws are a fundamental part of what this country was created on, and survives on.

And call them what, Mandated Government Mercenaries? I don't like our country's illegal immigrant policy either. We need to document who is here. However, most are not "moochers", but decent hardworking folks with better family values than we Americans have, doing jobs you and I probably wouldn't do for their wages. Right or wrong, realistically, we need to build a US/Mexico patrolled fence (not some stupid virtual fence as proposed by John McCain) and give all illegals Amnesty. At least this way we can control the influx of personal and know who is here.

I don't agree with mandatory enlistment. However I do think it would be an excellent idea to offer citizenship in exchange for so many years of service in the military.

No its a privilege to join the military. We don't need illegals fighting our battles. If you think about it, why would someone that won't enter our country legally be willing to join the military for citizenship? They really don't want to be citizens, they just want money and benefits.

We have a volunteer military. Why would we want a bunch of unmotivated freeloaders in there? Unless they were shields. Most of 'em are little enough to strap onto the front of a vest....

Absolutely not. They should be citizens before they go into the military.
