A lot of companies are doing credit and background checks as part of their pre-employment screening now.
Especially if the position is in management or requires the handling of money or is in finance.
Credit reports are a lot like report cards were back when we were in school only instead of showing how good/bad we are doing in our studies they show how good/bad we are at managing our debt.
Most companies that requires these figure that if you are not responsible with your owe debt chances are you will not be responsible on the job either.
As far as how strict they are, if they require it for employment there is no way around it.

More companies are doing more in the line of background checks. The cost of doing so is minor and affordable compared to the cost of making a bad hiring decision.
You might ask, " what does a bad cedit report have to do with the ability to do the job?" The aswer is quite simple, the employer usually has people applying for the job that do not have a bad credit report.
Handling personal finances is often an indication as to how someone would handle responsibilities. Poor handling of your finances might cause an employer to have second thoughts as to how you'd handle the responsibilies of the job.

yes, and they do back ground checks also..too many inquires will have a negative effect on your credit rating also which will also knock more points off and make you even less wanted as an employee....
been there , done that.....
can not get employment due to low credit score, due to lack of employment unable to keep up on the bills, unable to get employment, unable to rent some place else for better employment due to bad credit score....
and if you refuse to allow the credit check for these reasons, no job either...
around and around.....
the unemployment office has a person do all these job searches and submit resumes, etc...I showed them on the credit report what this had done....still no employment and still a bad credit rating....why???

i believe this is wrong anyone who does this would be invading your privacy and should be turned in... what difference does it make if you get the job or not? it`s none of their business...background check yes.. but credit check it`s none of the business... and should be illegal..

They don't "require" them from you, they will just do them. And you'll never know about it.
