What the others have said about the origins of The Bible are true. It was written by man, edited and translated by man. Nothing was written when Christ was living (that we know of).
However, please don't let this destroy your faith. I'm agnostic and I don't believe in the divinity of The Bible, but I do believe that many of the teachings of Christ are relevant today. If you believe in your heart that its God's word and you're following God's plan, then don't allow non-believers to destroy your young faith.
There will be plenty of time for cynicism after you've studied the scriptures and have come to your own conclusions - no matter what those conclusions might turn out to be.

Of course it is true. There is no Christianity without it. The Bible is the work of approximatey 40 authors over a couple thousand years. The New Testament was written by the Apostles who walked with Jesus the 3 years of His ministry, and those that wrote for them. They didn't write every little thing down, only the important teachings and events. The eyewitness information about Christ's crucifixion and resurrection, etc. Paul began persecuting Christians until Christ made an appearance to Him and told Him to be the Apostle to the gentiles. The original Apostles approved of Paul so the critics don't know what they are saying when they bad-mouth Paul. Read the New Testament and you will see that it is not impossible to write down such information. The people around Christ were with Him night and day. The Old Testament records amazing stuff that the Israelites went through to come out of Egypt and settle in the land. They were there. They witnessed the stuff, and they exist because of the truth of the Bible. Whatever you do, hold to the Scripture. It is the inspired word of God, and in it is salvation and life. People today hate God and will say anything to try and convince you to go to hell with them, though they think they aren't going there.

In part the Christian Bible is true. It's been "modified" through the centuries. The biggest modification was actually done at it's creation emperor Constantine in Constantinople. What we see today as the "Holy Bible" was actually a collection of religious documents still in existence at the end of the Roman empire. There were many thousands of documents destroyed or lost over the centuries prior to the creation of the bible. Keep in mind also that language translation has had an effect on the words in the bible. As anyone can tell you, change one word in a sentence and the meaning of the sentence will change as well.
Truth be told, modern man has less of a clue as to the truth of God's word than those who wrote it down and translated it. For those who are willing to open their minds and hearts to it, the Christian bible is a very easy guideline for living. Hardline fundamentalists in all religions tend to take their beliefs to the very fringes of radical behavior. The one thing you can be sure is a truth in the Bible is the warning that there will be many "false prophets" who will seek to corrupt you with their words. If you are going to read the Bible, pray first, and keep your mind open to what is being read. Do not fall into the trap of "is this true or not" like the millions of other lemmings out there who are following fools pretending to be masters of their religious beliefs.

The bible is not one book but 66 different books by different authors (27 in the New Testament and 39 in the old Testament). The 4 gospels were written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Luke did not travel with Jesus but interviewed those who did. The other 3 gospel writers were eyewitnesses. The bible does not cover everything from Jesus's life nor does it really try to. All 4 gospels cover the most important stores (to the author) mostly of the 2-3 public years of Jesus ministries. Only two mention his birth and only one has anything to say about his childhood. There is only so much you can fit in a scroll.
Obviously different people have different answers to is the Bible true. To quote Joshua from the book of Judges, "judge for yourself who you will serve, as for me and my house we will serve the Lord."

The Bible has never been proven in error historically, scientifically, geographically or archaeologically. The words that were written for generations to read and learn from were PENNED by men chosen by the Holy Spirit and guided by the Holy Spirit. A lot of history found in the Bible is also found in the written histories of the countries involved in what went on in Bible times.
Things that happened were passed down orally. Can you imagine the effort that would have been taken to make up the Bible yet no errors have been found? Someone will try to challenge this by pointing out 'contradictions' in the Bible. Don't waste your time because I have the same book...'CONTRADICTIONS IN THE BIBLE,' and all those 'contradictions' have been proven as twisted and in error, made up by those trying to discredit God's Word.
God's Word tells us that if EVERYTHING that Jesus did and said HAD been included in the Bible, we'd need a warehouse to keep it all in.

Alot of the answers giver are so so wrong.
The Bible was Written by the Apostle Luke,Petter, Mark,Paul, etc.
and the bible has been dated to 30 - 50 years after Jesus died
and 50 is a generous number.
Edit:
And no the bible has not been altered we have 25,0000 manuscripts which shows us that the bible has not been altered. the only changes are foot notes, or words arranged differently , or copyist errors which is normal , which is why we use all the manuscripts as a whole to put together a good translations theres a science to this.
Edit:
We also know the bible is true by prophecy read Psalms 22 Psalms 50-57
which all talk about Christ use google and look up prophecies about Christ.

The four gospel accounts were circulating in the ancient world within about 20 years of the crucifixion of Christ. They were written by eyewitnesses, and also by those (Luke) who conducted careful interviews with eyewitnesses.
We have around 25,000 copies or fragments of these early documents still in existance today.
The arguments used to convince ppl to believe used words like "As you yourself saw" or "As you know" because the ppl at that time were ppl who had been alive at the time of Jesus. If it were fake, lots of folks would have said, hey, that wasn't true. But they didn't say that, because they were there and they saw it. Some of the anti-Christian writers of ancient times do NOT claim that Jesus did not work miracles. They DO say that he was "a sorcerer" who learned "black magic while he lived in Egypt" and that was their explanation for the miracles, not that the miracles did not happen. So everybody knew about the miracles, even the ppl who were against Jesus.
You are right, not everything Jesus ever said or did got written down. I mean, to write every detail would prolly take hundreds of books, like right now if someone was writing my life, they would say "and then she typed at her computer" pretty boring. So, just the major sayings, and more important lessons and miracles were recorded. I'm sure there was actually a lot more that he said of course, the books are not that long. That also explains some different details mentioned by one person and not by another. If you ever heard a police eyewitness, you would get slightly different details from person to person. So yes, different things get mentioned in each gospel, but they are not contradictory. For example, one place mentions "the angel" and another place says "two angels" which is different, but the person talking about "the angel" just did not mention how many angels were there. Such as if you talked to your girlfriend, and her boyfriend was standing right next to her, you might tell your mom, "oh, I saw my girlfriend today...." but not mention her boyfriend.

It's certainly not one book.
You need to do a lot of work on the origins of even the New Testament.
There has not been total consensus on which documents belong in the bible, from whole books to short sections (eg the ending of Mark's gospel)
Is the bible true in the sense of being without error, being divinely inspired?
(at least in the original language... a few even hold out for the English King James Version to have that quality)
I don't think so, though it was a doctrine I accepted as a Christian, until I did sufficient bible study to reach the point where I simply couldn't believe that any more.
Others will differ. You'll have to study and make your own mind up.
Below is a page which appears to give the basic information reasonably neutrally.

The Holy Spirit is the revealer of truth. And brings back all the Truth that the Son -Jesus spoke of. That's how the disciple(s)were able to do that. Luke was a physican and looked at the Bible from a doctors piont of view. That's why his synoptic covers miracles that defy science. All what Jesus did is not recorded in the Bible. It says in the Bible basically we would have books and books to document His works. Becuase honestly when can you stop writing about the goodnes of God. You my friend are in a volitale state. Since you are a new convert the devil/the enemy wants to make you doubt the Bible. The infalliable Word Of God. Once the devil takes your faith away he has you. Decide right now you will believe the Bible, for that is what it means to have faith, and the Bible states without faith it is impossible to please God. Study at Bible.org
get in a Good Bible based Church and go to Bible study at your church as well as Sunday worship. Ask for the Holy Spirit to reveal His truth to you before you read His Holy Word the Bible.

NOBODY DID! People started to write stories about the last few months of Jesus' life over 40 years after he passed away!
Saint John said that the world has no room for the books that can be written about the things that Jesus did in his life... LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES All the Gospel writers copied from each other. Only Saint John is a bit different...
John 21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
Jeremiah 6:13 (NIV) "From the least to the greatest, ALL are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, ALL practice deceit."
