I have a friend who says he a 7th Day Adventist. He seems to be a bible literalist, believing in all the genesis stories. Is this what the church professes? The funny thing is that he is a bisexual who has had lots of gay sex. How does the church feel about homosexuality. In addition, he believes a number of things that I thought were unchristian, such as astrology, black magic, and witches. How does all of this square? Being an atheist, I'm kind of in the dark here. I'm honestly trying to understand his philosophy.

Sorry, your friend is not living up to the standards of the SDA church.

Visit the link below for details.

http://www.adventist.org/

SDA believe that the Bible must be taken literally unless the situation demands a different method of interpretation. Yes, seven literal days of creation, hence the 7th day Sabbath.

As it relates to science and technology, SDA universities pioneered proton treatment for prostate cancer, as well as the attempted use of animal transplant into humans (Baby Fay). I think SDA was also the first to SUCCESSFULLY separate Siamese twins joined at the head (Dr. Ben Carson). That is, with BOTH of the separated individuals living.

The church is worldwide and intricate. I cannot go into details here, but homosexuality, astrology and black-magic are strictly prohibited. But if these were his FORMER habits and he is now reformed, the SDA church does accept such members.

7th day adventist are great people and love God and believe in Jesus. He is just still in bondage to some sins and needs deliverance. I personally believe that the Bible is true and every story is real. Yes, those areas that you mentioned are not of God and some Christians still practice these sins, but that does not make them bad, just still need to be set free. Being a Christian is a process, we do not always change instantly (some do) and find ourself still in sins because the flesh is very hard to get under control sometimes, but that is why Jesus died so that His power can change us.

Well I am sure at a loss to understand him. This is the weirdest behaviour. Most of it is in complete contradiction to Christian faith. He has his theology all muddled to me. I do believe the Genesis creation story but I also try to practise the rest of my faith on the same principles. I get it wrong, often. But that is why I can speak to my Lord in prayer, asking for forgiveness and strength to overcome the sins I do. I sure hope he gets himself sorted and soon. And I sure hope you can find out about the Lord too and understand His will for your life too. Eternity can be spent with the Lord, or without Him. It is not a pleasant thought that by your own actions you may choose to perish. Please, I fervently ask you, seek the Lord. I would hate to see you lost.

Cheers

Lisa

Your friend's an original. All of the things you have mentioned don't go together in ANY belief system for ANY religion I have ever heard of. Matter of fact, most of them contradict each other to the point that I can't even imagine the Philosophy or logic that would encompass all of it. Is he on medication?

Not to put down your friend but he doesn't sound like follows everything true to its word. Seventh Day Adventist are different only because they worship on Saturdays not sundays. They are considered a Protestant Christian Group.

7th day Adventists are pretty conservative, more conservative than many other Christian groups in many ways. They do meet on Saturdays for their worship, though, which makes them stand out as "different."
They are very inclusive, with women preachers and lots of different ethnicities...still, their doctrine is really strict on a Bible type basis.
I would guess your friend is "backsliding" in that he is not exactly living up to his beliefs.

Your friend is clearly confused about what he is. Your're absolutely right - the Bible condemns those things you mention. While you can't judge an entire religion on the actions of one person, he's certainly not doing his faith any favours by the way he lives his life.

heterosexual marriages are the only biblically ordained grounds for sexual intimacy. Adventists do not perform same-sex marriages. Following biblical principles, Adventists believe in and encourage chastity for both men and women before marriage.

He sounds like an individual who doesn't go by a restricted dogma. I wouldn't judge his faith by his actions. People are like that. Some of them make up their own minds.
