She's looking to mate due to physical/cyclical readiness for pregnancy.
In animals it's correlated to hormones signaling readiness to mate.
The term "heat" is used because the hormonal changes actually raise the temperature of the animal during ovulation. Even though humans don't act any different during their ovulation, even in humans, the female body temperature does rise slightly during that time. That's precisely why women who are trying to conceive get conception "kits" which keep a chart of the basal body temperature rising to determine the most optimal time for conception by pinpointing the time of ovulation.

What the above person said. It's a term used for a female cat who is ready to get pregnant (usually happens to unfixed kitties after 6 months of age).
It's not fun for humans to deal with, because the girl cat might yowl or tear around the house like she's dying. This is all normal; she's just going crazy being unable to find a mate (that's why it's good to get female kittens fixed before 6 months of age, so they don't have to go through that first heat cycle).

When a animal or a pet is in heat that means that your pet or animal is able to reproduce at that time. If you fix your pet this won't happen.
It's is the seasonal cycle for reproduction. Heat cycles differ with different species. Getting the vet to spay or neuter your animal will stop this problem. If it's a cat, she won't go out of cycle until she drops the egg and she won't drop the egg until she's bred and again then you're going to have kitty's. So please get them spayed ASAP after 5 months of age for cats. .

Please keep her away from males while she's in heat, then get her spayed (fixed) most unwanted kittens are euthanized, (put to death). You can avoid this by not letting her get pregnant in the first place.
