I was just wondering if there was anyone out there that could tell me if being diagnosed with/having major depression could in any way effect someone being in a nursing program or working as a nurse. I was just diagnosed with major depression and I am starting on lexapro and starting to see a psychologst....will this in any way effect my nusing classes that I am starting in March. I was also worried about the drug test I have to take. I will be on the lexapro, do they only test for illegal drugs or will I need to tell them about the meds? Do i need to tell them about the depression? Just stressing out here not knowing what this could do to my schooling. Thanks for your help!

I am sorry I may have worded this wrong...I was more worried about the legal asspecs of the question. can being diagnosed with depression prevent me from being allowed to be a nurse or in nursing school? Thanks again! :)

I think it is private information. If your depression affects how you do your job, then you will have a problem. So, take your meds, find appropriate people to vent to, keep seeing your therapist. Take good care of yourself, eating, sleeping, relaxing, etc.

Well, having depression can effect your life, but you are on the right track by getting help. From the sound of it, I think that you will do great in nursing school. You know what you want and you are doing it. As far as the drug test, you should be fine. They are just checking for illegal drugs. Plus before you take the test, they may ask you if you are on any meds. Answer them honsetly, they cannot drop you if you are on meds. Take care.
