Gee, sweetie. It could be a flea allergy, food allergy mange, or systemic disorder. Strays are almost always filled with internal parasites and fleas.
PLEASE bath the dog using a mild puppy/oatmeal shampoo and COOL to cleanse his skin of allergens and fleas.
Use only cool water as warm water increases itchiness.
Then soak the pup in a nice soothing Aveeno bath.

Aveeno is sold in most supermarkets and drugstores.
Do Not use over the counter products unless recommended by your vet. They often do more harm than good.
If the poor pup is suffering from allergy and not mange, mange treatments will really make his allergies flare.
Until diagnosed, use only natural, mild remedies!

Best wishes to you both. You are awesome for helping!

If you start getting itchy spots on yourself, you will know it is mange. Mange is a type of scabies that can get on humans.

I ended up using just a little dab of Raid on the spots. Nothing else worked. I even sprayed just about the whole house with it. If it is mange, conventional treatment doesn't work very well.

Ididn't use enough Raid to harm my dog, just enough to kill the mites. I believe it was safer than all the repeated vet treatments.

(Head lice meds contain ingredients that kill mange mites just like head lice. Ear mite meds might help too, anything with pyrethrins)

Mange will usually cause small circle type hair loss spots. Bath your dog in lukewarm water making sure you rinse really good and use either hot spot meds or a bit of tea tree oil on the itchy spots. When the dog itches at the spots try to distract her with a toy so they can heal. Look for any signs of fleas which will cause a dog to itch like crazy too. You can add 1 teaspoon of Brewer's yeast daily to her food and that will also help with skin and coat conditions.

There are many skin problems that can cause this. There is sarcoptic mange, scabies, cushing's syndrome, lice, flea allergy dermatitis, walking dandruff, and many more. Hair loss can also be caused by parasites such as tapeworm. You should go to the local animal pharmacy and ask if they have anything. Also, you should get your dog dewormed once you go to the vet.

It could be many things. The most obvious being contact dermatitis from fleas. Sit your dog on a white sheet or towel and comb her with a fine toothed comb. If you see little black flecks, it's flea poop. Check your local SPCA and Humane Society's most offer clinic style low cost care.
