Yesterday my 7 week old kitten had it's first veterinarian appointment. The doctor dusted his fur over a wet paper towel and flea droppings fell out and he was diagnosed with having fleas. There weren't many droppings, only about 5 or so, but Rex was given Advantage flea treatments which I gave him as soon as we got home.

I asked the vet if there were products to treat the house, (growth treatments, insecticides, etc.) and he said yes but because I have only had Rex in my apartment for one week exactly, he said not to worry about going through all that, that all i needed to do was a thorough clean and vacuum.

Being my paranoid self, i went out anyway and got Zodiac flea spray for upholstery and furnature and went crazy spraying everything Rex has every touched or sat on and spent the entire night vacuuming and dusting.

I brushed rex this morning and found no traces of flea droppings, do you think the flea thing is done? or will they come back? should i have done all that?

Your vet has given you good advice and good products, you've done all you can and it appears there are no more fleas, so I'd say you're done!

Congratulations by the way, I think this is in fact a FIRST time for Yahoo Answers - someone has actually followed veterinary advice, and treated fleas properly! Well actually there is one little criticism - not Zodiac :-) It shouldn't cause you any problems, it's just that this company makes a spot-on flea treatment that's very dangerous to cats - we hate them, and don't want to support them by buying their products!! Don't use flea treatments from stores. Other than that - well done you!

I used to paintings as a Vet Tech and I noticed many kittens/cats are available in who had been poisoned (torpid) from house owners who purchased over-the-counter flea/tick medicines ~ the vet I labored for mentioned it's foremost to get a flea treatment that's for the proper weight of the animal and over-the-counter medicinal drugs are by and large simply unreliable specially for a kitten. The quality treatment (earlier than I grew to become a keep at residence mother in 2003) used to be Advantix - it particularly works however it takes an afternoon or 2 considering that the fleas die after they chunk the animal so although you should still see fleas they is also to your condo so be sufferer! Also it continues killing fleas for a complete month! They can even deliver you frontline and that kills fleas and ticks despite the fact that I have on no account particularly obvious ticks on cats. I could say that it could be wiser to move forward and purchase a product you already know will paintings then to waste cash at the over-the-counter stuff (considering that it is highly-priced too) and you already know it is going to be secure.

You didn't need to do all that as the fleas would have jumped back onto Rex (if they ever left him) and the advantage would have killed them. Dusting and vacuuming would have been enough. You didn't do anything wrong, just used a lot more energy than needed. Glad you went to the vet instead of buying a flea collar! Flea collars can kill kittens. Their necks are so small, the poison goes into the kitten's system. My friend almost lost her kitten that way...got him to the vet just in time. Good luck with your little buddy and don't worry about future fleas, Advantage will take care of them.

since your cat is a kitten you should use a small amount of Johnson's tear free baby soap an wash rinse and repeat about two times and wash them in the kitchen or bathroom sink do not get any soap in the kittens eyes or ears you can try putting cotton balls in its ears and rinse thoroughly because soap leftover can cause skin irritation do not listen to an other comments do this once a week
