Its been driving me insane for years because I wanted to know what it was. It was a show about this jack russel dog who's thoughts we could hear and i think he thought of himself as a detective. It done with real people as opposed to cartoons and it would have shown in the US around the years 1996-2000.

My youngest son adored that show. It was on PBS. Wishbone was the title, as I recall. Wishbone was the name of the Jack Russel.

It IS "Wishbone",which has recently returned to the PBS Kids lineup.

wishbone...i loved that show when i was little...it still plays on pbs here...he would re-enact famous books, he wasnt exactly a detective though
