That means the giving up of the ego completely. After that the surrendered individual does not exist, but become merged into that which the surrender was made to.

Well, it's kind of like if we were at war with China and you want to surrender to the enemy, but you don't know that it's China that we're at war with, so you surrender to the Dutch. The Dutch have a lot of people already - one of the highest population densities in the world (probably because they have the lowest abortion rates in the world - just kidding, it's probably because of all those special "coffee shops"), so they don't accept your surrender.
So then you try Guatamala, but Guatamala has its own problems and they aren't at war with us (yet) anyhow, so they don't accept your surrender either.
So then you try Turkey, Norway, Sweden, and South Africa and now they all think you're crazy.
Now, Russia sounds like it *might* make some sense, but Iraq and Afganistan are sounding more like it. Still, these aren't the countries you're trying to surrender to...
So the point is, it's a lot easier SAID than done. Some people DO have a lot of practice in surrendering, but not to the right God. So good luck finding God in the eternal game of Hide and Seek! Worry about surrendering once you find the right one. That's probably the easy part.

Salvation is the first work and Sanctification is the second. When someone gets Sanctified they ask the Holy Spirit to come dwell in them, that they are making themselves a holy vessel (hence the name) and are basically "putting themselves on the altar". This means that the Holy Spirit will be with you daily, helping to check your thoughts and actions, which will keep you right in the line of God's will.
Sometimes that involves putting our desires on the back burner; it will help us fight those human reactions, our carnal nature, as it removes carnality.
Every human is born with the carnal nature (thanks to the condition of man (e.g.: in the image of man), via the first transgression in the Garden of Eden.
When a child comes to the age of accountability s/he is liable for his/her actions. No longer are things just child splay, a "fib" or carnal reaction warrants a separation from God (sin).
Think of it as a literal seed, in which the seed, roots nor small growth is visible in babies and children. When they come to the age of accountability, the plants shows, you have a full grown tree.
When someone gets saved (justified), they cut down that tree, but the roots are still there, which will cause a person to struggle with human nature.
When you get sanctified, you remove the roots and all, removing the carnal nature of man, replacing it with the Holy Spirit (which is not something that comes fleetingly during a church service, causing one to speak in tongues or flop like a fish), which will allow us to further avoid sin, fully consecrating ourselves to God.
I found the following sites to be helpful, although it's really difficult to find much on sanctification, as it's not a popular doctrine, and is where many churches don't preach the entire truth.

This is a powerful creative state that is the intersection of psychology and physics. Causality is always the result and it has been cloaked in obtuse terminology since the first adept bumped into it. Religion no longer teaches it and each path/way has degenerated into trite moralism.
It is an unconflicted psychological state, emptied of the conditioned identity whose beliefs control our perception, thoughts, feelings and reactions. When this limited, indoctrinated ego is discarded entirely, reality (god) synchronizes with ones authentic being and purpose. There are three basic ways to approach it. Being, transcendence and bliss.

When you truly know that Jesus Christ went to the cross for your sins in our place, we can ask The Lord into our lives, confess our sins and ask forgiveness, Repent and turn away from them, by doing so, we invite The Holy Spirit to come into our lives, The Holy Spirit is the Comforter that Jesus Christ promised we would not be left with out, When the disciples were sad that Jesus had to go, Jesus said that they would not be left without a comforter, and this is The Holy Spirit,
THe Holy Spirit is our Guide, OUr Protector, and will convict us of our sin, Once we have The Holy Spirit we have The Lord and our saved.

you can fully surrender yourself unto God by prayer and supplication,
making your request known unto God" for he cares for you" .
By just surrendering what you want and asking what He wants because God has a plan for your life, if you only trust Him. God loves you and He created you to bring Honor and praise unto Him, And when god tugs at your heart, don't shut him off, listen to what He is saying to you. And then pray about it. God only wants what He thinks is best for your life. He only ask to be glorified. If you glorify God, others will be able to see his light shining through

How do I surrender to God?
When we hear the phrase "surrender to God" we might think that we are going to stop living. The truth is: we will start living! Surrendering to God doesn't mean living without a purpose. Instead, it means to start living with a purpose - the purpose that God has planned for us.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"
God is saying that He has a plan for our lives! We can give up our selfish desires, put our futures in the hands of God, and He will take us far beyond our dreams!
The book of James suggests that we "submit" or surrender to God. "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (James 4:7). Once again, we see that God desires that we give our lives and plans to Him 100 percent.
James not only touches the point of surrendering to God, but he links it with the second idea: resisting the devil. These two ideas go hand-in-hand. Surrendering to God is not easy and there will always be the temptation of returning to our own self. Even Jesus was tempted to not surrender His life to God's plan! But what happened? He resisted and the devil fled from Him.
Surrendering to God gives us a weapon to use against our enemy, the devil. Even when we are tempted to do our own will and live our lives in our own way, once we surrender to God, He will empower us to resist the devil.

By an act of the will. One acknowledges God by believing and by an act of their faith and confession, spiritual rebirth is graciously and lovingly given by God and the power of His Holy Spirit. The old man is crucified with Christ with the old sin nature and in the spiritual rebirth, the believer has joined or united their spirit with that of Christ and they become One in the spirit whereby they have the same unconditional love, mercy, compassion as Christ and of power and works but this is obtained by the baptism of power also obtained through Christ. This is the anointing of power that Jesus Himself fully operated under and was given to the 120 early disciples on the day of Pentecost and was commissioned by Christ for them to go out and minister this gospel of love and forgiveness and to make kings, priests and prophets preparing them for the kingdom of Christ on this earth, while they do the same works of Christ until He calls them home. One who surrenders their life to God become an heir of God and an co-heir of Christ and all of heaven belongs to them and they are able to pray in divine fellowship with their Creator and to receive from their Father, everything to do the will of God on this earth. We are the true kings of Christ and Jesus is our Brother as He is the Kings of kings and the Lord of lords and anyone who doesn't surrender to God, forfeits their rights as true kings and will not enter into the Kingdom of God...

"Ask and ye shall recieve" pray for total surrender. Seek God with ALL your heart, mind, soul. Be not conformed to this world but be transformed by the spirit of God. Regardless of whether you like it, whether its comfortable, regardless of anything.... Live according to the word of God and remember without Gods power YOU can do nothing. Live a life of sacrafice and thanksgiving.

by asking what he has for you and be willing to do whatever he puts on your heart. Its really not that hard because he will give you the strength to accomplish what he wants you to do. Paul said it was not my work but the grace of God on me. All the martyrs were called to be martyrs, proof: in history they weren't scared they all wanted to show their faith in martyrdom. If your scared your not called to be a martyr because God didn't give you that ability. John Huss is a perfect example. Right before Martin Luther he was teaching a class and he said he wanted to burn for God and he put his hand in a fire and started burning his flesh while his students tackled him down to save his hand. Later he was burned in a fire by the religious authorities. It's really simple; be willing. It's God's job to lead you to do his will. You will know if he is calling you to do something because He will put it on your heart until you do it. Don't make it complicated.
