There are a few free websites which offer some great advice as to what to look for as well as what to ask when purchasing a car. I will give you the link the The Auto Evaluator, which comes with 7 copyrighted checklists and pictures of what to look at on the actual vehicle prior to purchasing.

You can also look at the top 10 contributors and click on Ray. He has a very informative site also, and is great free advice and suggestions. Good luck and I hope this helps!

There are several questions that she be asked. First, any prior accidents that have been fixed? Second, is the mileage listed original or unsure? Are there any mechanics liens on the vehicle? Any major engine work been done recently or in the past? Do you have proof of a past service record of the vehicle. This would be reciepts from where that have been doing the regular maintenance on the car. That should help alot... good luck

i don't basically like the way that sounds. now and lower back you are able to flow to those apartment places and that they sell their leases on a private lot while they get so would miles on them. they regularly are below blue e book fee. So, i might examine around a number of those apartment motor vehicle places and locate you a superb used motor vehicle. Plus you comprehend they could shop those in stable shape or that they had have some considerable complaints on their hand for permitting human beings to lease/force crappy autos. i've got self assurance i became informed they sell them while they get 3 years previous. have you ever checked into leasing a motor vehicle? some human beings like that set up? i does not prefer to purchase a neighbor's motor vehicle b/c if something isn't precise i does not prefer any not elementary thoughts come between us. Sounds fishy to me. i might say deliver a mechanic with you yet, he's a mechanic. i may well be asking each variety of questions even those that carry forth the wall. Throwing a curve ball facilitates you spot if the guy is on the up and up. yet, no air.. not stable. unsure the place you reside yet, no air the place i'm at might suck. take care and stable good fortune.

Well.. you can ask a lot.. but sometimes you have to listen carefully to the answers (or lack of) to really learn something. BUT>. here are some basics

1) Any accidents?
2) How many miles on the engine?
3) Do you have a maint. log? (something that shows service and other records for the car)
4) Are there any liens on the car (ie: is it yours to sell?)
5) Mileage and oil use
6) Any major repairs?
7) Check out the model on some kind of consumer report. Sometimes an entire line of cars had such a bad design flaw that their life was really short.

but really its going to be what you SEE that should help you

a) Drive the car.. listen and FEEL. any rumblings or grumblings that might indicate a bearing or out of alignment item.

b) after its warmed up check the exhaust.. any excessive smoke (blue or black) or steam (white).. this is not good.

c) turn it off after its warm. Does it turn off or does it keep cranking to death.. (generally not good but there are a few exceptions)

d) leave the warmed engine turned off and check the body. Dings, cracks, dents, ? Dings are expected, cracks may be from failed body work, dents are up to your decision as to good or unaceptable. Look for badly aligned doors or hoods which may hint at an earlier accident of significant levels

e) Hows that paint.. look for bubbles or painted over rust patches..thats future body work if you plan to keep the car.

f) Look inside.. hows the upholstery.. sit and squirm.. does it still look good? Lift up the carpet if you can and see if the floor is rusty (bad body rot) and look under the seats to get an idea of how the car might have REALLY been cared for (and hey.. you might find spare change - grin)

g) try everything.. wipers, signals, horn, etc.. if it doesnt work now YOU have to fix it if you buy it. You might want to try it while the car is moving too.. sometimes it makes a difference

h) ok.. after about 15 minutes of looking around the car look UNDER it. If that engine was warm or hot when you shut it down, look for oil drops (or start the car up and back it away and look). All cars drip oil sooner or later.. if you see some ask whats leaking.. if you get a wishy-washy answer take it to a mechanic.

i) you can look at the engine, but by your question I have assumed that you are a bit of a novice so the basics are: look for rust (leaky hoses or bad radiator), oil on everything (car smokes a bit), noises when its running, /... look at the inside of the hood.. dirty but anything unusual like burn marks or a spray of oil. Is the battery new or old and covered with white fuzz (dont touch it). With any questions consider investing in a mechanical inspection

j) Tires: you can replace bad tires but look at the condition are they worn evenly -(good) or are they worn on one edge only (alignment or bent frame) or do they have gouges (called cupping) from being unbalanced or injury. If they are just worn, find out how much they will cost to replace. Check the spare (is there one? does it have air?) check for a jack and handle... if they are pristine new thats good.. beat up and greasy indicates that someone has done a lot of work with it (ie: car repair).

thats about all I can think of off the top of my head....

good luck with your new car....

When was last oil change?
How many miles on it now?
Miles per gallon?
Does it have a warranty?
Can I buy an extended warranty?
Look at the tires, make sure they have good tread......stay away from used car dealers that do NOT have a garage to fix what they sell.....if ya live here in the US...go to Honda Dealership..they are the best cars to get...Hondayi is next...Nissan....Chevy in that order......LOOK UNDER THE HOOD...check the oil..........better yet, bring another person with ya to help ya check everything....and make sure you take a test drive....and get added coverage....mechanical work IS expensive.....Gary

How much does the car cost?

May I see the title of the car? (Look to see if the car has been salvaged.)

Has the car been in an accident?

What is the car's history and maintenance record?

Is the car still under the manufacturer's written warranty?

When may I have the car looked over by my mechanic?
