I'm not a nut-case or a substance abuser... nor do I have any clinical mental illness (that I'm aware of), but I tend to have these strange sensations when everything going on around me is like a dream, not reality. It's NOT daydreaming. And it's not just feeling tired. It's like I check-out from reality for a bit. I see what's going on, but I feel like I'm not completely present. (I'm not crazy!! Although it sounds that way)
It's almost as if its some form of microsleep...or escape... not sure how to describe it. Sometimes it occurred at times when I was tired/sleep deprived, but other times I was well rested.

Fortunately, it hasn't happened for a while. It was at its peak during my teenage years, and I never spoke to anyone about it.

Anyone else had the same experience? Any experts reading this?
(And, please, serious answers only)

Senga, great to hear there's someone else out there!
I also posted a question under "Mental Health". Check it out, because it may be an "absence seizure", although I'm not totally convinced on that one. I've always been too embarressed to speak with my GP about it, not because it's taboo, but because I thought it was just me. I haven't had them for atleast 2 years, so I'm in no rush to seek professional help, but I would still like to get an idea of what it could be. We'll find an answer eventually!

It's not "dreaming". I'm still conscious, but what I hear, see, touch, say and do does not seem real. I can't be more specific, because it's too hard to explain. It's not lucid dreaming -- I've experienced that and know what it is. It's not an out of body experience, because I think you're usually asleep when that happens.
It's more like you go inside yourself (sounds weird, just too hard to explain). I was aware of it happening and I would try to struggle against it. I'm not exactly sure on the length of them. They were not permanent, but nor were they fleeting. Often lasted minutes, rather than seconds. Everything happening around me seemed confusing/different/new/fast maybe?? Really hard to explain, you have to experience it to know it.

Thank goodness there is someone else out there who has experienced this. I agree, it is hard to describe. I tried to tell my husband about this strange experience I had at work that day and he looked at me like I was mad! Its as if you're dreaming not fully awake. It hasn't happened for a while and was completely random. I too would like to know what it is

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!! I am awake and doing things in my daily routine, when I first feel like nothing is real! Then I feel like I'm just watching myself out of my body doing things from that point on.....I guess I hallucinate and become delirious because I see/hear things and objects get deformed.

Yesterday, I finally came of of one that lasted for 1 1/2 days!!! Scary!!!

It also happens when I guess i get a lack of sleep

Yes i believe they are called lucid dreaming, a dream in which you are aware of your dream.

One question!! Can you be more specific about what you do in this dream ?

It could also be an Out Of Body Experience!
