Please do not believe anyone when they say it will add years to his life. They act like it's a guarantee. It's not and you need to know this.
There was a study done in the UK that shows that in many cases, dog left intact will live longer then their altered counter parts. It's not by much, but it's still there. In other cases, altered dogs live longer.
Here is the study (you need to scroll way down the page as it under the heading of Longevity of British breeds of dog and its relationships with sex, size, cardiovascular variables and disease):

Here is another link that shows you both the pros and cons of altering your dog. It's not a one sided story and these are what I prefer people make decisions off of. This way they are making an informed decision, not one based off of 1/2 the story.

If you choose to leave him intact, just be sure to keep him restrained at all times. Keep him away from all intact female dogs. If you have a privacy fence around your property, there is no reason why he can't go out without being restrained. Just be sure to keep an eye out for areas where he may get out.

This is probably the best think you could do for your dog if you love him that much. It more than likely will add months or years to his life. Why? It will eliminate the event of testicular cancer. I know it sounds cruel to some people, but this would be a smart, educated and loving choice by you.

It will prolong his life if anything. He can get prostate cancer if you don't.
Also, having these organs can cause frustration and a deficiency in his social life with other dogs. They will go into dominant mode and mating mode instead of being friendly playful dogs.
What do you mean by personality? Don't confuse excitement with happiness. When a dog is excited they are unbalanced, not happy.

Neutering does NOT change personality..personality is what it is period.
Neutering does NOT shorten a dogs life..it actually helps a dog live a longer healthier life.
If you love your dog and want him around as long as possible & as healthy as possible you will get him neutered.

Neutering your dog actually ADDS years to his life.
"In terms of behavior, male dogs will benefit even more than females from being neutered. An unneutered male can detect a female in heat even miles away. Neutering decreases roaming by 90%. Responding to the overwhelming urge to reproduce, he will often become nervous and irritable, perhaps picking fights with other dogs, or become lethargic, less responsive to his owner, stop eating, or act ill or depressed. Among the problems reduced or eliminated by neutering male pets are:
Territoriality and aggression, including urinating to mark territory, and fighting to defend it
Wandering, escaping, and automobile injuries
"Riding" inappropriate objects
Prostate enlargement (occurs in at least 60% of unneutered male dogs 5 years or older)
Prostate tumors and infections
Tumors of the testicles, penis, anal area
Perineal hernia (rupture of the posterior abdominal wall)
Stress, leading to increased susceptibility to disease
Need for extra food"

It won't shorten his life. It will make him calmer and a better family pet. He also won't ever get into fits if he smells a female dog in heat nearby, which is good for him being destructive to try and get at her (escape the house).
But as far as his health goes, you'd be doing him a favor.

No neutering your dog will not take away from his natural life. The choice is yours. Neither will itmake him aggressive, or lazy. It will however cause him to put on weight easier, so watch his diet, and make sure you keep him active and your lil fella will give you years od lovin. Good Luck

It will not DEFINITELY add years to his life, but it will reduce the chances of him contracting various types of cancers, which is better for him in the long run. It certainly won't take years off his life.

It will make him a calmer, gentler friend. It will add years to his life, as he will be healthier, and also tend not to run away after the sexiest females he sees.

The only thing that will change is that your dog will not behave sexually! You will be doing the responsible thing and you will still have your dog and his wonderful personality!
