Vaccination is probably the most important advance in medicine. Antibiotics are a close second but when you consider that today we are fighting antibiotic resistance in many bacteria then antibiotics fade behind vaccination. To date vaccination has wiped out small pox and polio. Chicken pox, mumps and measles are extremely rare in anyone under 40. When Louie Pasteur and Edward Jenner discovered how to trigger the immune system, billions of lives were saved. To date, no killer virus has ever found to be immune system resistant.

The greatest and biggest discovery in medicine is not a particular drug per say but rather the understanding of the body.

What I mean is that the Egyptians, Greeks, and Persian always new the body could heal and adapt to anything physically because our body is essentially made of hundreds of cell from the elements of earth. These cells form tissue and organs and the epidermal. However modern medical science not only proves the former was true but also that cells are evolving and taking in and recording ( like a video camera )memory. So we now understand that anything can be altered in the human body by not just physical properties/elements of nature, but our actions. Ex. Did you know when you get mad and talk louder and or scream at someone blood rushes to your head. Every time you do that you change/code the the mitochondria which is the "power plant " of a cell. If you did that for a number of years you are actually coding your DNA with high blood pressure, that you will past on to your offspring.

In my opinion, the most important discovery ever in medicine was the concept of "germ theory." In the past, doctors didn't know WHY someone was sick, so they would try things like bleeding, "feed a fever/starve a cold," faith healing, and herbal treatments that may or may not have done anything.

The concept of germs (small entities that spread disease, i.e. bacteria and viruses) revolutionized the way doctors treated and prevented disease. Germ theory led to:

-Vaccinations

-Hand washing between patients

-The discovery of antibiotics such as penicillin

-The idea of sanitizing a wound and medical instruments during an operation

5) Jenner and Pasteur again for vaccination and immunization principles.

Penicillin

I think the biggest initial discovery is that plants could be used as medicine ( discovered in the BC's). Without that discovery, penicillin wouldn't have been discovered.
Present day, probably one of the imaging techniques (X-ray, CT scan, MRI, or sonography). To be able to see inside the body increases the ability to find damage, disease, or pathology.
