SLR means Single Lens Reflex. It describes the mechanical method the camera uses to allow the image to pass through the lens onto the medium that catches the image. It can describe either digital camera or the 35 mm film camera.

DSLR stands for DIGITAL SLR.

The difference has been explained already.

The Canon Powershot G2 is none of the two - it is a "normal" digital camera - and fine one as far as I saw on the internet. It looks like it even has an optical viewfinder which is a great thing to have in difficult lighting conditions.

slr is single-lens reflex and dslr is digital single-lens reflex. unlike slr which uses traditional film to transfer picture. dslr transfers images to a memory card. it gets more technical. but that is the basics to get you started
