With dopdf, you just select print and print to dopdf and it will convert the file to a pdf.

This is free Windows software which allows you to convert any file you could send to a printer into a PDF file. After installing, open your .doc file and then choose File > Print and then in the drop-down list where your usual printer shows up, you'll see an option for PDF 24. Select it and then print. The PDF will be saved to your computer.
It's quite simple and a utility that I use all the time myself. Good luck!

You could also use openOffice.org. Their office application, writer, has the ability to save to pdf, while also supporting the Microsoft doc format.
