I land at JFK at 4 and would love to grab a cheap and direct flight at 5.30 in a different terminal. As I will be in transit from Tel Aviv to Toronto but flying different airlines, do I need to go through customs at JFK or can I just grab my bag and run?

Because you will be setting foot outside the JFK terminal in order to get to another terminal, you will have to go through immigration. If your bags have to be taken by you (rather than by direct transfer from plane to plane), you will also have to go through customs.

If your flight to Toronto goes from another terminal at JFK, they may have a secure passage so that you don't go into the main terminal concourse, and then you might not have to go through either customs or immigration.

Even if you fly with the same airline and just spend 5 minutes in JFK you have to go through U.S. customs

The only way not to go through U.S. customs is to go directly to Canada, for example if you fly over the U.S. from Mexico to Canada, but the plane doesn't stop in the U.S. there are no U.S. customs to be cleared

Oh, to live in a world without customs !!!....
