The roots of Santa Claus predate Christianity. There were customs of gift giving and decorating the home during the Solstice way before christianity. Here are some web sites which explains it to some degee.

From what I recall (and I don't have the details) there was a guy (I think it was Saint Nicholas) who went around the town giving gifts to the poor people and children. This sentiment spread to other countries, who had their own version of Saint Nicholas. Now, in the current country (called Commercialismland) he has evolved into a mass gift-giver...but only to good boys and girls. I love the concept that he represents...helping out those who need it, but he's being taken too far here in the USA, representing commercialism and greed. I think Santaism needs to go through a reformation! Viva la revolution!!

Nothing , he is out to destroy the remeberance of the changed birthday of Christ. He thinks he is god because he can tell who has been good or bad all yr, He can go around the world to whom ever and deliver what ever in one night and he can make his reindeer fly , and parents lie. So its all fiction and just a story thats been made up.

St. Nicholas, a devout Christian, is the patron and protector of children according to the story I posted the link to below.
The article is too long to post in its entirety.

It's a way to get peoples mind off Jesus and onto buying gifts and teaching your children that you lie. Just like Easter Taking your mind off of Jesus and onto the easter bunny.

He keeps the retailers in business. This is the time of year that makes or breaks their financial bottom line.

He's the patron saint of Macy's, Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, Toys-R-Us...you get the idea.
