Other's covered the subject pretty well... for the sakes of Boot-camp. There ARE going to be instructors who ARE Officers... As I recall, LEGAL instruction matters have to be conducted by a commissioned officer.

When I was in the Navy, a Company Commander (same as Drill Instructor) responded to being called "Sir" by saying:

"Sir ?? GOOD GOD DANG Son, my parents where MARRIED !! I'm a Chief Petty Officer!!"

I also once recall (as a 2nd class Petty Officer) giving my first tactical pre-flight briefing to a female pilot and calling her "Sir... uuh Ma'am..." She laughed and called it an honest mistake caused by habit... Lord knows NO ONE could have mistaken HER for a "Sir".

First off, if the instructor is an enlisted person, they don't like to be called sir, or ma'am. Its usually Yes Drill Sergeant, No Drill Sergeant. They take the gender out of it.

However, if they do call then sir or ma'am, it would be Ma'am, Yes Ma'am!

In the Marines, we say Yes sir or Yes Ma'am. Our boot camp trainers are call Drill Instructors, not Drill Sergeants, and we call them Sir or Ma'am whether they are inlisted or not.

Instructors are enlisted not officers.. I recall while in the Navy I call my Senior Chief Sir once and he said "don't call me sir, I work for a living" so i said aye aye senior chief

When you are in training in the Army your Drill Sergeants are enlisted.... You say "Yes, DS (Name)" or No, DS(Name)." You NEVER call an enlisted member "sir" or "mam," they will quickly tell you that "they work for a living" You only refer to officers or warrant officers as sir or mam.

No, in the army, trainees don't generally answer to their instuctors as sir. They generally answer to their instrutors as sergeant or drill sergeant.

If you don't want to be yelled at you don't call NCOs sir or ma'am. You call them by their rank.... or in your case, if you are in basic 'drill seargent'

You have your answer from others, but what are you really saying. I don't see a problem with these salutations.
