Aww, you mean it's over? ;) Having been feeling extra nostalgic, l changed my avatar this morning. To run across this question right after is Synchronicitous, to say the least.
The Hippie Era formed me; it formed a generation, it changed society in amazing ways. We noticed and demanded our freedom and responsibility to dissent; our music changed music forever; women began emerging from their roles as "lesser vessels."
The increased presence of television made us aware of social injustices and human rights issues; we picked up the ball and ran with it. Much that we started is still evolving.
Was it all good? Of course not. Nothing is. But so much of it was! As I grow older, I become more and more aware of how much I draw from all that was good and right in that era. It was a powerful force in shaping me; in shaping my generation and in empowering generations to come.
[Hey, Laz, I wonder if we ever ran into each other in a coffee house somewhere? Reading Heinlein?] =)
Give peace a chance!

Am I to understand you are citing The Great Depression and World War II as reasons the 30's and 40's did not suck?

We made a lot of positive progress during that period of change. People tend to forget this, and see only the bad side. Our society gets too full of itself at times, and needs to go through periods where people look at it critically. We need another period of change right now. We have gone backward in a lot of ways, since that time. Traditional institutions have gotten stuck in the status quo, and have become very resistent to change. We need to keep growing as a society, not get so full of ourselves. Our generation of baby-boomers, need to come alive again, at least those that still have some life left in them.

There was a huge downside too. Take Abbie Hoffman's bestselling book, "Steal This Book". He gave information on growing pot, starting a pirate radio station, how to steal food and credit cards and to shoplift, how to make pipe bombs, and how to find weapons to be used in battling law enforcement.

Man it was great you could make love instead of making war without the religious thingy bob to govern you in your beliefs. Smoke dope and drink the death out of each other in the name of peace be with you sister and brother and let rock and roll rule.

It was like far out man but, all seems to have been for naught. Our generation was going to save the world from itself and what's our lasting contribution so far...Bush the Elder & Junior. God help us all...Peace out!
