I went for my physical and drug screen last week and signed a conditional offer of employment to be a probation officer. Two days ago I called to see if they had received the drug screen and physical and was told they hadn't yet. The woman stated that on a "side note" if the physical and drug screen came back fine, she still couldn't hire me because there is a hiring freeze in Fl. Is this normal? Do you think maybe they didn't like something on the drug screen or physical and they were making excuses? Both should be fine. I just thought it was so weird to offer me that and talk about the academy etc. and then when I think everything is good to go...be told there is a hiring freeze and I will be put on a waiting list.

that is the government for you... YES it is normal.. and usually what happens.... Just keep looking, for other options. Most of the time when you go through the entire process they will call you... eventually..

I had a friend who was in the military, about a year before he got out, he applied for a government job,,, did all his paperwork, test, physicals, background, everything.. he got a conditional offer so he got out of the Marine Corps,, thinking he would get the job... HIRING FREEZE! He did not get hired until 1 1/2 years later....

welcome to the land of money and politics..... I am still in the process and waiting for a call, it has been a year.

Normal. Sad, but normal.

Cities and other government departments are forced to go on hiring freezes all the time.

It happens frequently in government but also in private companies. My sons company just decided to cut back and canceled plans to hire several people because to the credit crunch. He works in the financial industry.

This happens. I lived in Florida and had friends that suffered the same problems you are having. They eventually got hired.
