Looks like it just upscales them. You didn't mention what you hook it up to, be it a hi def TV with an hdmi cable or not.

The HDMI cable does more communicating, like selecting the best resolution according to the material, and of course sound and video are 1 cable.

Some equipment can even communicate remote control functions through cable, but that is not standard across the brands, like my Panasonic TV could control my Panasonic DVD, but I do not have a Panasonic DVD, it's another brand.

You do not need to spend a hundred bucks on a short cable. A twenty dollar one works just fine. I am a little afraid of those 6 dollar ones on eBay, but that's just me.

The true hi def players are still expensive and the war is on over Blu ray or HD DVD so some people are still saying wait to buy.

High-Definition Multimedia Interface

The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a licensable audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed, encrypted digital streams. HDMI connects DRM-enforcing digital audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, a Blu-ray Disc player, a Personal Computer, a video game console, or an AV receiver, to a compatible digital audio device and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV). HDMI began to appear in 2006 on prosumer HDTV camcorders and high-end digital still cameras.[
