By society probably yes. But by knowledgeable dog owners, no. There have been a few people in this thread that labelled pit bulls as fighting dogs and they have been in the past but there are tons of other dogs that were bred for aggression and were fighters in the past.
English Bulldogs were pit fighters. Who looks at an english bulldog and thinks fighting dog today?
Great Danes were bred to hunt boars. They were bred for their fearlessness and their size. Do you look at a Great Dane and automatically think fighting dog/killing machine. I would offer that most people would not.
Pit bulls are physically capable of doing a lot of harm and have been vilified in the media. Strangely enough though anybody know what breed is the leader in reported dog bites?
Golden Retrievers.

Yes they will always be considered dangerous just like the Doberman. The Chow. The GermanShepherd. The St.Bernard. The list goes on.
There is always the chance an animal will turn nasty if ALL their needs are not met.
People think all a dog needs are food, water, shelter and shade. That's just wrong.
Dogs need exercise which is as important as getting fed and they also need mental stimulation.
A bored dog is a destructive dog.And one who is forced into a life of solitary confinement for being a dog is a resentful dog and it will ultimately do harm to someone the first chance it gets.
Providing for all of a dogs needs does not insure an accident will never happen eithewr because dogs perceive things differently than humans and left in any situation where they may feel threatened they will bite. It's the only way they have to defend themselves and people can not understand that.

Pit bulls aren't dangerous dogs at all. The owners are the dangerous ones. I'm not sure of what your saying about the nasty thing but if your trying to say will they turn on you that's so not true. I've owned pit bulls all my life and never had one turn nasty on me the worst I got from my pit bulls was a growl when I clip his nails and that's because he doesn't like his feet touched.
Now I do know that yes pit bulls do bite people but so does every other breed of dog. My mother is healing from a gash on her ankle right now from my friends dog. And its a evil little poodle mix. Small dogs attack way more than big dogs all the time. But of course no one wants to hear about a little dog or a retriver mauling some kid.
And I kind of take back what I said eairler. Yea some pit bulls have turned on their owners but those are the ones who where beat daily for no reason at all and all dogs will do that no matter how loyal the breed is.
But we can't just focus on the bad things about pit bulls because all pit bull owners know that the good out weights the bad. There are pit bulls doing therapy work, search and reascue, sniff out drugs and bombs and a whole lot of other things that I can't remember now. But you won't hear that on the news now will you.
Did you know that petey from the little rascals was a american pit bull terrier. And that the pit bull was the mascot for an old army poster. They are really great dogs. But as you know when dogs get so popular and end up in the wrong hands a lot of bad things can happen, remember all the hype with the doberman and the rottwieler. Now I see a lot of "gansters" walking around with cane corsos trying to look hard. Its just all about the next big thing. All this hype about the pit bull will die down soon. But for pit bull lovers like me, it just seems like its taking forever.

pitballs are bred to fight. You are taking a big risk bringing a pitbull into ur life, having said that just like people some of them are mean and will fight other dogs and others are very nice and seem like a bunny rabbit on the inside. I would suggest if you want a dog to search different types of dogs just in case you see one which would be better for your home. good luck!

To understand the American Pit Bull Terrier, it is imperative to understand the breed’s fighting origins.
The lower class had used blood sports as an outlet for their frustration and aggression towards the monarchy - pit fighting was, in essence, an outcry and an outlet for that aggression.
A quality that was never bred into them was human aggression. Human “aggressive” (aggression may not be the most appropriate term, it is more likely that these dogs simply had a lower bite threshold) dogs were undesirable as these dogs required extensive handling prior and during their fights - most of theses dogs were also family pets so no human “aggression” was ever tolerated.

As a owner of a pit bull that is also her service dog I can tell you this breed is one of the best you could own smart and quick to learn They make very good family dogs and very good work dogs. Just becasue a small precent is so abused by thier owner to make them dangerous is no reason to wipe out a breed. If pit bulls could talk I beleive they would have a pray that went something like this:
Prayer of a Pit bull
Spirit in the sky, who watches over all animals:
It is my prayer and my request that you grant greater understanding,
and acceptance to humans;
those who love us, and those who hate us.
That they will know how loyal we are, how brave we are,
and how loving we are. Help them to accept us as a breed in whole, and not let the few tragedies shine brighter than the many great traits that we have. And those who would kill me,
let them know, I forgive them, even though I don't understand their hatred. And those who would beat me, let them know I still love them, even though it is not the honorable way.
Thank you for all the strong traits that you have given to me,
and my breed. Help those to know that I stand for
courage, strength, loyalty, and bravery.
And as my master already knows, let those who would come against my family know that I would surely die defending them.
And just one last thing that I would ask:
Let my master know, that if you should call me away,
that I will wait patiently at those pearly gates
until the one who chose me,
comes home.Amen.

I think it depends on the individual animal. Just by their breeding, they are always going to be fighting dogs, but as with many animals it depends on how much they have been exposed to this kind of life or if they have been kept as pets. As with all animals, they should be supervised when around young children as their senses such as hearing and smell are far different to humans and there is always a risk that they will react without warning, for reasons we cannot explain.

Pitbulls, yes, as long a the USA lets anyone breed any dog to any dog w/o severe consequences. A well bred Pit that is brought up right can be an awesome pet, many have saved lives but a poorly bred one whose owner ties him outside and lets neighborhood kids tease him will alway end up dead one way or the other.

They will yes unless more people are educated on the breed and the fact that there is no such thing as a bad dog, just simply a bad owner.
These dogs like many others are not born nasty they turn that way due to no training or the wrong training. People should learn how to train their dogs properly and know what it truly means to be a pack leader before they are allowed dogs at all.
