Melbourne is good. You can hire a car and get to practically anywhere in Victoria within the day, plenty to see and do in Victoria, the River Murray, you must camp on the banks of the murray!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Great Ocean Road, the Dandenong Ranges, if you like Surfing your near some of the best spots in Aussie, Like Torquay and Bells beach near the Great ocean road. theres the Grampians in Victoria, and if you head to the eastern border of Vic you will see the awsome Snowey mountains and the highest peak in Aussie of Mt Kossie, Mount Kosi nationl park is amazing:) It will be very hot and humid up north in Jan so it is the right time of year down south.
just driven right the way around Aussie and if i was going for a month ide visit Victoria. Melbournes more fun than Sydney as well. If you can get to Melbourne for the time that big day out is on the Tennis open and Australia day is great in Federation Square. You can get cheap rides with other travellers if you check the notice boards in the hostels. Hope you have a realy good time, make the most of it. And have a beer for me :)

Or if you want it Quieter try the area South of Perth, this is a great corner of Aussie. Margarret River, Bussleton, Walpole, Denmark, Albany and the Valley of the giants, a tree top canope walk amongst some amazing old and very big trees. Esperance is great as well, ide say Victoria or the South western Corner of Austalia. perths a concrete Jungle and lacking in the Vibe that other citys have but the area south of perth is Outstanding if your into Natural Beautey.

I have only been to Sydney and Cairns with day trips from those places, but I can thoroughly recommend visiting them. From Cairns you have the Great Barrier Reef and some wonderful rainforest scenery nearby. Sydney is one of the world's most beautiful cities, with the "Old Coat Hanger" bridge, the Opera House and a delightful harbour setting. A trip to the Blue Mountains is essential if you go to Sydney. Where ever you finish up going to I hope you enjoy your holiday. Australia is a lovely country.
