While shifting to head voice from middle voice, in mouth, nose, throat, where do we feel the difference? Or what exactly should be used while doing this?To be able to sing in higher octave, which exercise should i do? Please write in detail as i am a learner. My age is 35. Also all time throat needs to be cleared. Can any one say about thieve's oil? Is it effective in clearing throat? How?

Dear :) Alto,

Vocal registers such as head, middle, and chest voices are changes in vocal color. The head voice is so named because of the resonace in the forward mouth, nasal cavity, head, and face felt when singing. It is light and bright in nature. The chest voice is a darker fuller tone that resonates in the chest and mouth. The middle voice is a mixture of the head and chest voice. It allows the voice to be smooth and seemless.

Feeling the difference:
When singing in head voice sensations can be felt mostly in the face, nasal, and soft pallet areas. The highest notes use in this register resonate more in the nose while the lower notes are more present in the soft pallet. When using the chest voice I feel most of the sensations in my chest, vocal mechanism, and once again the soft pallet. The middle voice is most noticable in the soft pallet.

Everyone's vocal instrument--body--is different. Remember slight differences are normal. Get comfortable with your singing. Sing to the mirror...and touch your nose, face, throat, chest, abdominal region, sides, and back when you sing. It's amazing what you can teach yourself by becoming more aware about you. You'll learn to prefect things and you'll even be able to pick up on your own mistakes so they can be corrected. Go with your gut.

Singing higher:
Vocal exercises are mainly preference. Everyone is benefited differently and has favorite warm ups. Some of my favorites for higher things include, a run through the entire range in sort of a fire-whitle-like mimic, also whining like a puppy works well for me. Get creative...make up your own.

Congestion and Flem:
Water, water, water is your new bestest friend. 8-10 glasses a day, more if you can take it. Keeping the vocal mechanism properly hydrated is a pain, but it's so worth it. More water helps keep your whole body healthy, cuts down on annoying flem, and keeps you vocal folds hydrated. Whatever you do, do not caugh or clear your throat. These methods remove flem by banging the vocal folds together, thereby inflaming and even damaging them. Spicy things also help clear flem. Caugh drops are also good as long as they do not contain menthal.

I've personally never used thieve's oil, I recomend doing some homework before you use it. I use peppermint oil to help clear my sinuses. I just open the bottle and breathe it in deeply.

Good luck and happy singing!

we call it head voice because we feel a superaabundance of vibrations going on in the skull when we sing in that range. If we take a moment to reflect on it, we still feel our voices in the rest of our body. The production values are still the same, it's just our sensations that take place differently. In middle and lower register, it's very easy to sense the sound in our mouths. this should not change when we sing high. Nothing rides up, nothing is produced anywhere else than before.
What we can and should do to facilitate the register change into high voice is to reduce the amount of mass that we take up there. It's easier to lift a light weight high than a heavy one, isn't it? We don't shed mass, or add air, we try to think the voice streamlined. I know that isn't a very accurate way of putting it, but the physical description of what actually happens is not understandable unless you have an anatomy book at hand.
You mayhave noticed that when you go to sing up, you need to open your mouth easily from the mandible hinge.
this also helps keeping a small streamlined sound going without getting pinched up.

confident. song: 'they're coming to take you away haha ... heehee... hoho ... to the humorous farm.' they are going to have on white coats. So don't be afraid, and don't submit a combat. in simple terms pass alongside with them and wait and notice. ; )
