Someone keeps telling me that the appropriate word is "red" I say the appropriate word is "read"...
The past tense of "read"...
I know this in the wrong section but there is little if any activity there right now....

The correct sentence is "I have read a book" or "I am reading a book" Red in English is a colour. You could say "I want to read that book when it is published" Or "I am currently reading that book" I hope this has helped your English. Have a great day.

The past tense of read is read, pronounced red. You have a stupid friend.
Unless you painted it; you have read the book, maybe it was a religious experience for you.

President Andrew Jackson said that..."It is a pretty poor man who can't figure out at least two ways to spelll a word.'
President Theodore Roosavelt attempted (and failed) to install a system of phonetic spelling in America.
my take---if someone understands what you are saying, then you have been communicating effectively and correctly. I have opened a refrigerator door and seen a tupperware container labeled, "Rice Peel-Off" and that worked for me. I knew what was inside. It was good.
I wil continue to re-read things that I have already red, and I am not ashamed.

For all three tenses - Past, Present and future it is ' READ ' only but the in past tense only it should be pronounced as ' RED ' and for present and future tenses pronunciation should be "REED"-
"Have you read Salman Rushdie?" Past tense Pro. Red
"read the advertisement"; - Present tense Pro. Reed
"The King will read the proclamation at noon" - Future tense Pro. Reed-

Read. One word, two pronunciations. I have no idea why. My Grandfather, who didn't start learning English until he was about twelve, used to gripe about how stupid the English language is because stuff like this. I can't say I disagree. He always cracked me up though. He used to count ''one, two, tree'' instead of ''one, two, three,'' and refer to electrical outlets as ''let-outs.''
