I'm very proud of all who are serving. I was married to an Air Force man for 14 years, lived all over the place( of course) on and off base, even though divorced now, I hold a strong admiration and sense of family for our military personnel.

I served in Vietnam and Iraq, retired as a First Sergeant. Two things that I know to be true are that my wife was an incredibly important partner in my career adventure and I would not have been successful without her. The other is that the men and women I served with are the best people I have ever known. I will always feel a connection to any member of the service I meet and they will always have my respect for what they do.

Not a good idea to do it for what someone else would think. Only do it if it s an internal conviction. I'm sure your parents and more importantly yourself will feel better if it is a decision that is 'squared' internally than based on what someone else thinks. Set high standards for yourself and then strive to surpass them - whatever they might be. Have you ever thought of finishing college first then making the service a carer or venture at at officer level? There are a lot of entry points into the service and a lot of opportunity coming out - practically everyone recognizes the excellent experiences veterans bring back to civilian life, even those that might not be obvious at first. I once competed with a guy for a job. We were pretty equal in experience and education but he had been in the military commanding 500 men under very trying circumstances. Despite our on the job experience (civilian) and education being equal, he literally 'blew' me away. I must admit it was a legitimate win for him AND the hiring company.

I spent over 20 years (1965 - 1985) serving in the U.S. Navy. I've been to places I'd never even heard of. I've been on 5 ships, 8 oceans/seas, 6 continents (which included a 13 month tour in Antarctica, the spelling of which cost me a spelling bee in 4th grade), over 30 countries (stationed in 3). I'd do it all over again with no question.
I am PROUD to be an American veteran.

I've been in for 7 years. Enjoyed it so much. I'm proud to put on my uniform. I'm getting out next year so I can focus more on MY life, instead of what Uncle Sam wants me to do. I feel 8 years is a long time, and I will always be proud of being a soldier and for my accomplishments.

I served in the Marines and am very proud of it. I wish I could still serve but an injury prevents it. I doubt they would let me do 30 years as a junior officer, I do not have what it takes politically to make it in the upper brass.

Put in my time and proud of it! If I could find that fountain of youth and shave off about 30 pounds, I'd do it again. Although I could never keep a wife, it wasn't all the military's fault, I had a little hand in it too.

Of course I am proud to serve, or else I would not have been serving for over twenty years, active and reserve.

Absolutely!! I was a Marine for 6 yrs, from '86 to '92, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I am currently in Iraq now at a civilian contractor. I have to say that I would love to be a Marine again, but being a civilian pays more. ;-)
