This is an excerpt of an e-mail to a famous Christian evangelist from an atheist.

"...You are really convinced that you've got all the answers.
If you believed one bit that thousands every day were falling into an eternal and unchangeable fate, you should be running the streets mad with rage at their blindness. That's equivalent to standing on a street corner and watching every person that passes you walk blindly directly into the path of a bus and die, yet you stand idly by and do nothing. You're just twiddling your thumbs, happy in the knowledge that one day that 'walk' signal will shine your way across the road.

Think about it. Imagine the horrors Hell must have in store if the Bible is true. You're just going to allow that to happen and not care about saving anyone but yourself? If you're right then you're an uncaring, unemotional and purely selfish (expletive) that has no right to talk about subjects such as love and caring."

Thoughts?

Ray Comfort is the evangelist. I don't know who the atheist is.

Ever read the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God?" It's a lot like your quote there, its available online and is a great read if you have the time.

The Bible was written over thousands of years - 66 books and about 40 authors who ALL tell the same story. Missler has likened the word to a hologram - a 3D picture which, unlike a photograph, if you cut a slice out of it, you won't lose the picture (though you might lose some sharpness). That is because it's an integrated message from God. It's also a message containing about 28% prophecy, that's almost 1 out of every 3 verses being future-prophetical. Only a God who exists outside of time can do that with 100% accuracy.

The King James Version (and most modern versions) are not literally true. And the corruption (mistranslation) that is most prevalent is the one you pointed out, the one about an eternal ever-burning hell.

In the original Greek and Hebrew there is no torture chamber such as what traditional commercial Christianity advertises. There is no God-sanctioned Christmas either.

God never pretended to make a perfect Book but a perfect Man.

He never intended to put his laws, wisdom, love in a book but in the Man's heart.

He never intended that we go around teaching men about God but He said every man will know him.

To go and make disciples all over the world means just that, a disciple is one that studies the truth, Jesus is the truth, a disciple is one that follows the Master, Jesus is the Master, not churches, just Jesus.

To go and announce the Kingdom of God is meant just that to announce the Kingdom of God. Not to make a Sect and make up rituals and offerings.

But Jesus knew people and that is why he said: I do not come to bring peace but sword, union but division. It is not what he wanted but he knew that is what men do for their own advantage and/or ignorance. (He was just responsible enough to show that he was the reason for it)

What happened in time of Jesus was a transition to new days. Days coming were the men would be baptized in the Holy Spirit, coming out of the waters of the world. The waters are peoples, languages, nations.

you are correct , there is a place called hell that every non believer will end up in. i should be out there trying to save everyone . I'm sorry , but you are forgetting that like you , i am human and i am a sinner and i have not reached the point where in my own mind i don't count and only others count .
oh yes i forgot and so did you .... God sent his only Son to take the hit for all our sins and all we have to do is believe.
you see God has unconditional love for us all . That is something we , for some reason, can't understand .
thank you for the thought we probable just saved some one ......God Bless you and yours.

Lol yah you have a point but why do it when we have all the televangelists doing it for us lol but even they miss the point. The Bible says we are to sow the seed and its God that has the water to make it grow and also "judge not lest you be judged yourself" so real Christians shouldnt be passing judgement but I work at fedex and there is alot of people i do what I can to preach the word of God to them but if they dont want to hear it im not about to force it upon them but have love for them as My Father did for me when I was in disbelief so its a tough job but its the Fathers will to preach "That the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand" Good observation

First, not all books of the Bible have to be interpreted literally. It depends on the literary genre. Some books are narrative, others are poetry, apocalytic, parables, prophecy, etc. You don't interpret poetry like it was prose, do you.

Second, there are acceptable approaches to evangelism that's not hard selling.

Thank you. I was wondering where that quote came from. Could you edit your question with the individuals' names?

Edit: Thanks again. Definitely worth thinking about.

BTW...is there a thumbs down fairy today? I'm still trying to figure out what I said that deserved a negative reaction. :-?

That's exactly why my church currently has over 60,000 full time missionaries serving throughout the world. We take the scriptures and God's commands seriouly.
