Looks like from your avatar picture that you took that verse just a bit too literally!! =]
"An eye for an eye" means do not exact more punishment than what is required for the crime. If someone steals a loaf of bread, don't kill him for it, and don't make him work for ten years. The same idea is found in American law with the phrase "the punishment should fit the crime."
