Dinna worry. People have a way of making you tense.
My son spoke clearly at 1.5 years
My daughter could only utter mamma pappa etc at 1yr 11 months. People were really bugging me with unwanted advice. Today - at 2yr and 1 month, she speaks well enough.
I bet your son is much more observant than the ones that learn to speak easily. Remember ... non-verbal expression is also a very important aspect of communication. Your son (like my daughter) is probably very good at this. Be happy you got such a son instead of the clever by half ones that sing "Beedi Jalailey" at 1.5 years !!!

So what is the problem? How old is the baby? Tell people to but out if they make you tense.
EDIT: Children speak at their own rate. He doesn't want to verbalize right now he is content with what he is saying. Some children don't speak until 3 or 4 yrs old and then start with full sentences. It's not that they can't they don't want to. So don't worry and tell the rest of the worry wort's to leave him alone! He will talk when he is ready.

At a year, the infant will attach "mama" or "dada" to the right person. The infant can respond to one-step commands ("Give it to me.")
At around 15 months, the infant continues to string vowel and consonant sounds together (gibberish) but may imbed real words within the gibberish. The infant may be able to say as many as ten different words.
tell your family to relax, talking takes time.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Maybe your inlaws and partner are taking other childrens development into comparison. Remember children do develop at different rates and boys do tend to be that bit slower. If you're still worried I'd take him down to your local health visitor to put your mind at rest.

I dont think that you have anything to worry about esp since your son is mimicing words by speaking such sounds. That's wonderful and in no time he will be blurting out words! My son is 16 months old and says: more, all done, mama, dada, hi, bye bye, boo boo, ouch, no, ball, up, pap pap, star, please, bear, santa, eyes, nose, shoes, socks..again not every word he says is clear but is clear enough for me and immediate family members to understand.

Children develop at different rates and it could be that he simply does not want to speak now. If it truly concerns you, you should talk to his ped.
