She has the dry form of macular degeneration in one eye and the wet form in the other, and is totally blind in one eye. We are thinking about using stem cells to help improve her heart function and it would be a terrific plus if it would also help her eyes.

I'm afraid not. Stem cell therapy is iffy right now. In some instances they help and in most others they do nothing. The secret is in the cells themselves. Whether or not they work depends on what genes are turned off and which are turned on. As the embryo develops, cells become more and more specialized. In every tissue some cells stay undifferentiated so that they can repair tissues. The systems most helped by this are the ones that have the most wear and tear like skin and gut. There is some indication that stem cells from the marrow can help the heart repair itself but that is a rare phenomenon. It's too complicated to fully explain embryology and stem cells here but so far no one has been able to trigger stem cells in the eye or the spinal cord for back injuries.
