Taiwanese Mandarin sounds softer and more mellifluous to the ear, it seems. Anyone know?

Of course Beijing Mandarin and Taiwanese are different. They are different dialects and they have different pronounciation, some difference in word usage, and slang.

I have a Taiwanese colleague and, in discussions with people from Beijing, they say that they immediately recognise the different 'accent' of the Taiwanese. Although the vocabulary is essentially the same, there are apparently some minor differences. I've noticed too that the tonal distinctions don't appear so marked from the Taiwanese girl; but I do not know if this is general or simply her idiolect as she has lived in the UK for 4 years.
