The W-9 is used to advise the payer of your taxpayer ID number -- your SSN for the typical individual. That means that the money paid to you is reported to the IRS and guarantees that the IRS will be looking for it on YOUR tax return. This is ordinary income to you and MUST be reported.

The W-8 series is used by foreign nationals to report their status. In most cases non-resident aliens are subject to source taxation on that income. It's withheld at a flat 30% and paid directly to the IRS by the paying agent.

I'm not sure what "lvlksuperior" is talking about; it's gibberish to me. W-9 and I-9 are totally separate forms produced by separate Federal agencies for totally separate purposes.

No, a W9 or commonly called a I-9 form is used for reporting gains to the IRS. A gain is profit, the value of a contest prize, large lottery winnings etc.. If you are being asked to release your social security # on the inet do not do it, it is a scam to gain your info.
