I Also Have A Tournament Coming Up As Well And I'm Doing Point Sparring. It teaches You Some Things In Life. It Teaches You Self-Control, Speed, Power, How To Get Around People To Get Them, Your Weeknesses, Your Strenghts, And So Much More. You Should Try It. It Will Open The Doors To So Much.

Tournament fighting has several benefits. One is that it can be an additional motivator for students to work and train harder. Second, it gives a student an opportunity to see other martial artists and their skills and see how well their own skills and training match up against them. Third it places you in a semi-combat situation against someone that you don't know which is mentally different than fighting your classmates in class. While you are correct in that it is far removed from full contact and/or a street situation it is the closest thing that some students will ever get to that and being able to test their skills.

I never force a student to compete and even though a student may benefit it from it the decision is always theirs. At the same time I have some that compete in Kata or Weapons but not fight and I also have students that don't compete at all. Students can and do get hurt in fighting sometimes and no decent instructor should "expect" a student to compete, especially in fighting. The fact that you are already expected to tells me that communication between you and him has already fallen way off the tracks. As I see it you have two choices. One is to sit down and communicate this to him and not compete which may adversly affect his relationship with you. Second, go ahead and compete and try to do your best but afterwards at the appropriate time communicate to him that you won't be competing in the future.
