If they indicate it during point of entry to the US customs, usually how long can they stay? Would half a year be too much?

You visa would have an expiration date. Your parents would be coming with a tourist visa and likely would have been asked that same question at the Consulate and the Port of Entry.

Six months isn't too much, but make sure they have sufficient funding for the stay and also that they do not show any intent to stay with their son in the US beyond their stay. They must have sufficient ties to Hong Kong. They need to declare that at the Port of Entry. If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about.

If you apply for a b-2 tourist visa, you can stay 6 months. Just make sure you buy the return ticket and present it to the US immigration officer.

Up to six months. The "expiration date" on your visa only needs to be valid up to the day you enter. Your passport needs to be valid for the entire length of your trip.
