Despite its name, the YMCA is not just for the young, not just for men and not just for Christians. It is, however, as our history illustrates, an association of members who come together with a common understanding of the YMCA mission and a common commitment to the YMCA's vision of building strong kids, strong families and strong communities.

Across the United States, 20.2 million members are part of 2,663 local YMCA associations. Each association is different, reflecting the needs of the local community. Your YMCA in your community may have a facility with a gymnasium, pool, child care center or even a school. It may be a storefront operation delivering community-based programs such as job training or youth and government. It may be a camp, or it may be a satellite program in a local school. It may be all of these things.

Whatever the facilities, whatever the programs, what doesn't change are the people. What every YMCA has in common is a dedicated group of people: volunteers, staff, members and donors—all of whom are committed to our mission. It is the people of the YMCA who build strong kids, strong families and strong communities—and you can help.

The Young Men's Christian Association was founded in London, England, on June 6, 1844, in response to unhealthy social conditions arising in the big cities at the end of the Industrial Revolution (roughly 1750 to 1850). Growth of the railroads and centralization of commerce and industry brought many rural young men who needed jobs into cities like London. They worked 10 to 12 hours a day, six days a week.

YMCA was originally the Young Men's Christian Association. However, today it is open to all people no matter what their race, creed or color. Most of the Y's have great work out areas and good pools too.

The YMCA and YWCA don't discriminate. I think they're sort of like Historically Black Colleges and Universities. At one time, they had a strong majority of a certain group of people. But these days, they pretty much accept you if you pay the fees like everybody else.

May God bless you.

It's for everyone.

My kid's took swimming lesson's there.

When my daughter was 17 she advanced to being a life guard, after training of course.

They have the YMCA and the YWCA, for men and women but my girls went to the YMCA for men for their lesson's.

They were there for self improvement not religion.

YMCA operates under Christian principles but there is nothing that says you have to be one to join. I also haven't ever been approached at one like do you know Christ or anythiing, I mean, they don't shove it in your face, so it's cool.
