There is sooo much cherry picking in the bible. You can find a verse to justify your opinion about anything.
The fact of the matter is that more and more governments of nations of the world are abolishing the death penalty as an affront to human dignity and the trend of such abolition is continuing unabated. There is no reason to doubt that one day the death penalty will be dead and gone from the entire world.

No individual person has the right to take a life, but governments do. Capitol punishment is within a government's ability and responsibility given to them by God to keep order. God gives governments the sword.
As far as Jesus' opinion of putting people to death, He will someday, what about the second death? The total information we have about Hell comes from Jesus own words, He didn't leave it to Paul or other New Testament writers, but since He Himself will one day face those individuals, He took it upon Himself to warn them.

I'm a Christian. I'm an American. I am against the death penalty. In America, there are many differing opinions, some are for the death penalty, others are not. Since I don't believe in taking another human's life, except in self defense or the defense of someone else, I am also against abortion. My vote was outvoted.

That verse does not say "I don't think this woman deserves to die for her offense." Instead, it is saying "You are not in the position to be the judge of that woman." In MANY other places in the Bible, God did judge that people should die. He is not against the death penalty.
Abortion is a very different matter. How can you compare the two? In one, a person's life is taken because he was found to have taken a life. In the other, a person's life is taken because they might be inconvenient to keep.

As a person no one has the right. Society has a right and duty to maintain law and order. It does not do a perfect job but it is still the best system in the world today. The Bible says you shall not kill but that does not apply to war or to justice. In the Old Testament it gave cities of refuge for those who killed some one by accident to flee to. Societies fall apart when justice is denied to those who deserve it. Tumult replaces those societies before they fall look at Rome.

You are right! I as a true Christian can tell you that they get all self righteous with the "eye for an eye" thing. Jesus spoke of love and forgiveness. Only if it was not a cruel and unusual murder.

Whoa, dude. Jesus also said he wasn't here to change his father's laws; laws which, themselves, many times prescribed the taking of a life as punishment for many crimes. Murder is also well defined as being very different form 'lawful' execution. Read a book all the way through before you go making strawmen out of it ;-)

well the people that read (and/or believe) in the bible always find ways to 'spin' it so it makes sense to them
it is wrong, but (to them) I am sure there are exceptions
