I was taught on a stick shift, it is best to downshift at least 1 gear down..and apply the the brake from time to time to control your speed so it doesn't increase the rev's to much.

Gear down and don't expect to travel as fast as you would in the higher gear.
In other words, don't let the engine over rev. Every once in a while, before entering a curve, apply the brake to slow down. If you find that you are constantly applying brakes, then you may need to gear down one more.
At the TOP of the hill, slow down enough to select the proper, lower gear, and don't let the engine turn much faster. By the way, you won't be burning more gas with the engine's higher revs. You won't be feeding any gas to the motor, as long as you keep your foot off of the accelerator.

on a stick shift, it is best to downshift at least 1 gear down...or 2 gears down depending on how steep the grade is. the noise or high rpm is normal but is totally safe. it may waste gas, but your safe which counts more i guess. it is wiser to downshift on a downhill than to rely on your brakes as a rule. hope this helps. 35 yrs of driving backs me up on this.

DONT LISTEN TO JOHNNY... unless you want to die...If you are going down a hill and your foot is off the accelerator, NO FUEL is being consumed other than idle amounts.... your motor will rev due to the amount of gravity you are exposed to, YES TRUCKERS USE THIS TECHNIQUE which is proven for vehicles.. a manual trans will not be harmed...They are subject to more force under acceleration
These must be some steep hills.. Pump the brakes... dont ride them which will cause excessive heating... dont let the motor rev into redline (dangerous level under positive or negative acceleration). always wear a seatbelt... lol

atleast 1 gear going down hill, there is not that much weight that would be pushing your car down to go faster.
I drove tractor-trailer for 14 years
and the rule was always go down hill 1 gear lower then you came up hill. course your not hauling 70,000 -80,000 lbs

depends..usually no leave it in which ever gear your driving..down shifting is usually done by truckers to save their brakes and to keep them from over heating....use your brakes....brakes are cheaper than transmission and engine.
Unless on steep hills use a little down shift say 4-3 plus brakes to help slow you down to keep brakes from fading or overheating.
