Since ps3 has wifi already built in can i just scan?

I'm getting my ps3 in less than a week and i want to know for online we already have dsl and we have modems i want to know if i can put the ethernet cable ino to an extra slot with mymodem and be able to play online that way or should i already be able to scan, cause my computer is in my room and the ps3 will be a least 5 ft. away from it.

You can do either one. You can use a ethernet cable that is hooked to the playstation 3 into your modem or if you have a router that is hooked up to your modem then the playstation 3 can automatically scan the wireless signal (Wi-Fi) and you can surf the internet wirelessly without any cables.
