Because it represents an abandonment of logical thought. The distinguishing characteristic of h. sapiens is the ability to apply logic to evidence and reach valid conclusions; faith is the intentional rejection of that ability.

It is a mirror and when we look into it we find who we are.

Finding out how God really feels about things places a great deal of anxiety on most people - because they realize that their lives aren't anywhere near lined up with God's plan. It's much easier on the mental health issue to ignore scripture and believe the lies like "God loves everybody - He's gonna forgive us all for whatever we do anyhow, so don't worry about it. "

Ask someone who thinks they are god, who thinks they should proselytize to the point of exhaustion, who can't function in the real world to any worthwhile degree, who sees angels and devils everywhere they look.
Someone who is so sad everyday, they begin to think about commiting suicide, and then finally do it.

Because a person should take responsibility for what they do. Not blame god or the devil, or their hopeless without a higher power. Just excuses.
