I saw a similar question that has been resolved and although there was some discussion of this question, it wasn't the main question.

There are some ingredients I simply do not like, such as chocolate and nuts, and I also have neurotic issues with people who are not very sanitary (it's not like everyone washes their hands before reaching into that serving dish).

Everyone would get offended if I called them "dirty," no matter how I tried to spin it so usually I just say that I don't like that food. I have tried the "save it for later" routine but they always catch me. Either I forget to eat it or, some of them, will keep watching me to see what I do with it! I have actually eaten food that I did not want before just to avoid conflict.

I'm open to ideas here!

Perhaps you could say , "I would love to have some, but only if you let me take it home." Hey, maybe you have someone at home who might like it, or a neighbor who would appreciate it, This way you could wrap and store and no one would see if you were eating it.

OK, you do NOT want to lie to these people who are just being nice, but it's awful having food you cannot bear to eat pushed at you.

Dr Shorty is completely right about just saying 'No thanks', that will work for most people. But I have also been the victim of the pushy types who follow you around and want to know if their cake is better than someone else's and haver you eaten that fruit slice yet?

For these folks, without a doubt the 'special diet' reply is the best one to give. Simply tell people you are on a special diet for bowel health reasons for the next month.

Act unhappy because of all the goodies going around ~ oh, what a shame, on this diet I can't eat x,y,z, etc etc!

If people say 'Oh there are no nuts (or whatever) in this', tell them you cannot risk it because many products are packed on assembly lines with nuts, and also that many pre-packed products have ingredients we are not aware of.

Since this is true, no-one can argue with it.

In January, after all the hoo ha has died down, you can go back to eating what you like, and say the diet is over, your bowel is fine.

Cheers :-)

Tell them you have stomach problems and you have to watch what you eat closely so you prefer to make your own food. Or just say you have food allergies. Or just say you have a germ phobia. Theres nothing wrong with the truth. You hear about people having germ issues all the time. Dont eat because you feel forced. Youll just make your neurosis worse. I once got invited to Thanksgiving at a friends house and before the meal was served they were laughing how the cat got a hold of the turkey and pushed it onto the floor and dragged it across the room. I will also add that these peoples house was always filthy. I dont have a germ phobia but that night I didnt eat any turkey.
So youre right you dont know how clean people are.

I agree with the first answerer, anyone who will not accept a simple "no thank you", really doesn't deserve much in the way of politeness. I'd say, if they really pushed the issue, "I DO NOT want to eat that, thanks anyway..." and walk away or put some other food on your plate. But I don't let people push me around, and usually they don't try to! Maybe it is the sincere look I have the first time I tell them "no". (That look has been known to startle cobras) LOL

Say thank you so much but that is not on my diet. and I am allergic to nuts and choc. I was just tested at the doctors and recently found out. (since they may have seen you eat it in the past).

it seems to me that your quirky behavior has already labelled you a "germaphobe" and there is no turning back so have fun with it.
Take a coin out of your pocket say heads i eat, tails i dont eat.
and just flip it and say oooh tails, sorry maybe next time.
that will really give them something to talk about..

Its not really a big deal dude, i think they offer you food now just to see your reaction.

A polite "No, thanks." is all that's necessary.
There is no need to pretend to save it for later, and there is no need to offer an explanation. People have all kinds of reasons for not wanting to eat.

Say "No thanks, Im trying to lose some weight" It always works for me. If you are very skinny and this wont work here are some suggestions:

-No thanks, im full.
-Sorry but im allergic to______.
- No thanks, im fine.--- The "im fine" adds a note of finality to the subject.

Hope this helps.
