You need a ramrod specific to your make and model of muzzle loader, so it will be proper length and diameter to fit in the holder under the barrel. Any sporting goods shop can cross-reference and find the proper one for you.

You need one that is not so long as to protrude past the muzzle.

That will probably be about 27-28 inches at most.

If you can't measure the old ramrod, get a wooden dowel a bit smaller in diameter than the ramrod (A 1/4" or 3/8" wooden dowel 36" lone will do fine), insert it into the thimbles as far as it will go. Make a mark even with the muzzle and then measure from the end.

Doc is right about the length...but
be careful about using store-bought doweling as a ramrod; sometimes it splits and you end up with a stake through your hand.
