I am in the sports nutrition/ Food engineering business and can tell you that not all proteins are created equally. There are several different ways to extract and filter the protein. Some ways like Ion exchange or micro filtration are very $$ and the price and quality will be reflected in it as well. This applies to all whey and casein proteins alike. If your on a budget then buy what you can afford, If you have some money to play with then shoppe around skip over gnc and look on line there are many companies that sell direct and by the lb like trueprotein.com and the soon to be genetic-science.com. There are A lot of opinions out there but science and food engineering are facts.

Good Luck

Why would there be binders in pure protein?
Tabs have binders because of the way they need to be digested. Some work better then others because of the binders and how they are mixed with the product itself.

As far as taking in extra one would do it if they are trying to loose weight or build muscle. If your looking to gain muscle use 1 to 1.5 gr of protein per lbs you whey if you are 150lbs then shoot for 225 grams of protein a day. Try and get most of this from natural foods, chicken breast, tuna, lean beef and pork are great, skim milk cottage cheese and yogourt are also great as well. Protein drinks are great for people who do not have time to fit in the necessary meals required to get the amount of protein they desire. They are also great for pre and post work out when you will require it the most. For fast digestion a whey protein is best, for slower digestion and weight gain casein is good also a mix of the 2 thought the day can really make a difference on one's goals.

Protein is protein. Your body can deal with it no matter what source it comes from. If you're eating a normal healthy diet why do you need this extra protein anyway?

Read the label on the back.
The difference between name brands and store brands is usually the binder, ( what keeps the pill together.) Beyond that, no difference.
Save your money.
