Earlier, someone spoke of religion as analogous to training wheels for early human society, which we are now ready to take off. I really liked this and was surprised I'd never heard anybody say it before, so I wanted to share (even though I have the feeling that this is an old analogy that I've been miraculously oblivious to, but then maybe I'm paranoid).

What do you think of it?

I think it is an excellent analogy.

In ancient Greece, for example, religion and science were all tied up into one search for truth: the emotional aspect of religion allowed science to take hold in the hearts and minds of people. A similar situation happened in other areas, such as India.

However, now that we don't need the excuse of "God did it that way because he/she/they wanted to", it's finally time to take of the training wheels and go on a bicycle ride.

Very good analogy. Sounds like something my boyfriend would say.

I like it too, but a more apt analogy might be that humanity finally learned how to walk.
