In college I dated a girl that would tell me Dr. SO&SO said thus, and this professor said that...as if God himself had said it. I wasn't on that page. Some people may feel that way, but I certainly do not. I read the Bible and study it. I happen to be a member of a large denomination, and may ask a minister his opinion or go to a web site to see what the "official" doctrine is of the denomination, but I will still draw my own conclusions. I may agree or disagree, but my decision is based on what I see in Scripture. It is a misconception to think that Christians are mindless puppets controlled by church officials. (Although, sadly SOME may be.)
Some, may have been taught that they are not to question the church. I feel this is very wrong. I have questioned and questioned, ministers, professors, seminary teachers etc. I have probably given some headaches! But they were gracious enough to share their learned opinions based on what they saw in Scripture, and even at times to say they just didn't have an answer this side of heaven. Some were even humble enough to say they were wrong about something.
As I explain in my profile, I think seeking answers is a very good thing. I find the more I learn, the more I realize I do NOT know.
Many denominations have docrinal statements. I would tell someone not to just swallow them hook, line, and sinker, but to take the "show me" and "convince me" approach.
As far as values, those are found in the Scriptures. I am responsible for them. They are not made by man, or a church official. I do not keep them perfectly, thus the need for a Savior.
I hope this clears things up, and that God blesses you as you explore things further.

A church is where believers gather for fellowship, worship, and learn the Bible (what it says and how to apply it).

Although the first believers did meet at the Temple often, they would meet daily at each other's homes (Acts 2:42-47).

Today in many nations, Christians are persecuted for their faith, and have to fellowship in hiding. Prayers, teaching, and worship are often done quietly, so they won't be beaten, arrested, or killed. (Many are bold in sharing their faith (evangelism) and suffer much. These times of fellowship are times of renewal. http://www.persecution.com )

Overall context of "church" explained, here is about teachings in a church:

There are churches where you will have pastors/elders/priests who will tell people what to do or what not to do in a legalistic way, mind you. Some churches teach false doctrine, most are either weak or moderate in their teaches, and a few are very close to what the Bible says (This is based on the churches in America, no matter what the denomination)

We are to choose what to obey or what not to obey. We much compare everything church leaders and teachers say to the Bible, and listen to the Holy Spirit's guidance. (Acts 17:11; John 16:13-16)

If a church leader or teacher is teaching contrary to Scripture, we must first go to them 1 on 1, and out of love and concern, try to understand where they are coming from. If the teaching wasn't clear enough, and so misunderstood, then the teacher or leader will (hopefully) publicly explain the correction of their error.

If they intended the wrong teaching, then Matthew 18:15-17 applies.

Hope this helps

Nah dude. Sorry. I went to Catholic School, and even though I hate the Catholic church... others are good... the people are responsible for their own actions. It's like... the church just connects the people, but the people are responsible for their own actions.

Nope. Not in the least. I base what I do on reading the Bible for myself. In fact there are somethings I do not see to be sin that my church teaches against. I just do not throw them in the face of my church and go ahead. We are to work out our own salvation and that with fear and trembling. Relying on man to tell you what you can and cannot do is a sure way to fail.

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

The Bible gives Christians guidelines for living a Christian life. Christians still have to believe in God, accept his teaching and decide to follow the teaching in the Bible. The the values that are written the Bible become your values that Christians life by.

The church is not the origin of truth. The church gets their truth from the bible, which is God's word, and God is the origin of all truth. Get it right.

not so....
we each have a mind and a choice, to do right or do wrong. we will have to answer for ourselves.
we go to church for strength and to fellowship one with another. church is not a place to be dictated to or brain wash, we go there to pray and to fed upon the living word of God, so when the tempest come we have the power [through Christ] to resist evil......."resist the devil and he will flee from you".
if you remember the bible said......"choose you this day whom thy will serve, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord".
that's what we must do......choose this day........

No. A church is where people go to worship God.

Kinda. Basically, they're not allowed to use their own freethinking minds to take a position. If it doesn't agree with the church, than it's not okay with them.
