What types of practices do they use in their faith? What exactly do they believe in?

Voodoo is a strange mix of African religion and Christianity.

I happen to have a co-worker from Benin. He strongly believes these things exist.

Basically, Vaudon (the original African religion) is an animistic cult which places great emphasis on magic. There are beliefs of sorcerers being able to turn themselves into animal spirits and of making people sick at a distance through jealousy (something similar to the beliefs in the evil eye in Europe).

In Haiti, they mixed up those practices with Christian belief.

Voodoo is an African religious tradition, NOT a religion. It is practiced by those in the West African Vodun religion, and, unlike what many ignorant people (such as the first answerer) assume, it has almost nothing to do with dolls representing humans.
It is a monotheistic religion, much like Judeo-Christianity, and it asserts that a single God called Mawu created the Earth, humans, and lesser deities and spirits which are represented by nature (e.g. in streams, trees and other nature stuff)

They offer cigars and rum to the lwa. I think that's cool.

Basically, it's a form of the Yoruban and other West African religions that continued to be practiced by black slaves after they were transported and was syncretised with Catholicism.

The West African belief systems generally had a Creator God and ancestral spirits that acted as intercessors, which were later compared to and syncretised with various Catholic saints.
