I am flying to Hawaii and then taking a cruise (from LAX.) I want to take with me 4 or 5 glass jars (empty) and put notes in them to drop overboard and hope someone in a far off distant land will find one and write to me. Can I get empty glass jars (like a mayonaisse jar) thru security in my checked luggage without them opening them? Thank you.

You will be able to check the jars in with your bag but TSA may open your bag for a random screening. They will just open your bag and screen it. But remember you you do put the jars through checked luggage, you may want to wrap it so they don't break when they handle your bag.

IF the jars are empty they should be fine in checked in luggage.... they are only concerned about liquids. IF they check your bags and open the jars, since there is nothing in the jars it shouldn't be a problem. Not sure your going to be able to get 4/5 jars in a luggage bag without breaking unless they are wrapped very well. Remember security can go thru any luggage they want. Enjoy Hawaii...I live there and love it!
Aloha!
