Yes, it is unbelievable. But there is a "cultural" explanation. Mohamed is a prophet. Prophets cannot be associated with anything that might diminish them, as that would bring great disrespect upon them. Now being associated with a human person is OK, because a prophet is a human person. But association with an animal is considered very degrading. Nevertheless, the reaction to Gibbons seems all out of proportion to her intent. Guilt, to be meaningful in a religious context, would seem to require an intent to do evil. As Gibbons had no such intent, it is entirely irrational to accuse her of a crime of insult. Therefore, I do agree with you, that this is more an outpouring of rage against the west than anything else.
Edit:
Theists Seeking Freedom, I agree that religious people of all persuasions, including Christians, can become seriously detached from the teachings of their sacred writings. The problem in making a moral equivalency between Christianity and Islam is that in one the leader both taught and exampled personal pacifism. That would be Jesus. Islam's founder does not have that to his account. In short, the more consistent one is with the teaching of Jesus, the less violent one will be, whereas Islam, as a system of teaching, offers no substantial barrier to violence other than conversion, whether forced or voluntary. Please see the source listed below for documentation on Islam’s doctrine of violence.

How can you say that the Muslim faith is to blame for this idiocy? That's like saying that Christianity was the cause for the murders of the Crusades (a fact that Christiants avidly deny). How can you claim that Islam causes evil but Christianity doesn't?
I think you should go with the typical Christian argument here and say that it's not the religion, but the PEOPLE THEMSELVES that are the cause of this murderous ignorance. You wouldn't want to be a hypocrite, would you?
As for me, I believe that it is largely caused by their religion, but you can't factor out the fact that people can be generally stupid when they want to be.
And yes, I think everybody who isn't a Sudanese psycho thinks it's strange.

Actually after seeing the muslim reactions to a few cartoons I am not surprised at all. Muslims claim to be about peace and love but the instant someone does the slightest thing they disagree with they want them to be killed. So much for peace and love.

"I think this is just a racist excuse to hurt someone from the West."
I think you're mostly right, but it's not racism. It's just the normal combative view that Muslims are bred to. Always looking for someone to hate and kill.

Don't forget you're talking about a country with an illiteracy rate above 60 percent. Ignorance remains one of the true scourges of this planet.

Yeah, imagine how those kids would feel. They were the ones who named the bear, not her. She's just a infidel. Let this be a lesson to us all.
