Those people that observe christmas. When November comes around I hear them all saying how they should give to the less fortunate, charities and homeless orginizations. What about the other ten months? Do they think these problems just go away? Are they really decent poeple or do they have to be reminded once a year to do something decent? I think they're just trying to get their "goodguy badge" and this is when they are reminded to do it.

Actually, I agree with you. I don't like Christmas for the very reason that you stated--we should observe charity all year around, not on some silly holiday.

But most people think that I am evil for saying that I don't care for Christmas, whatever.

Obviously some people are hypocritical, doing it for appearance sake. Some people, but others care, and do what they reasonably can all year round, without bragging about it. It's just at Christmas when the realization of how lucky we are, that we remember those less fortunate, and try to help out. Even if a person is hypocritical, at the end of the day it is a good thing because it helps those charities, etc, that normally wouldn't get so much support.

And why do you believe these people don't give through the year?
Christmas occurs during the Winter up here in the Northern Hemisphere and it is obviously a very difficult time for many people; it's cold, the days are short, the nights long. Energy costs go up. An increased need for warmer clothing and shelter than during Summer months. The expectations of people seem to rise.
Worry less about these "other people" and what motivates them. We can't see what's in their hearts. But you can continue to set a good example. Sadly, some people need to be reminded to help out, they get busy and forget that needs exist all year. So are you going to participate in some activities throughout the year to help others remember?
You sound like you have a passion for helping. So quit judging and help!

I think you're generalizing here... lots of people do this, no matter what their religious beliefs are. I like to think that people are feeling festive and generous during the holiday season so they give more... I don't think that makes them hypocritical. And while it would be great if everyone would contribute year-round, the truth is, every little bit helps. Even if you only give once a year or if you only do it so that you can earn the "good guy badge," well, you've still done something positive.

That is partially true, the rich people, including celebrities only give to charity so they can use it as a tax write off and say they did something for the people for better publicity, now as for other people, there are actually people who give to a charity out of the goodness of their hearts, i imagine they probably do it around the holidays because they may feel its most appropriate, you cant expect any regular working class person to be able to give to charity all year around.

I do not see it as hypocritical for many..........

There are many families and individuals who give of their time, services, food, resources ( whatever they are) all year long.........they are to be commended.

There are also many families who STRUGGLE throughout the year for a living. Yet the spirit of Christmas: good will, brotherhood, love, joy, peace etc..COMPELLS them to give a "little something" to someone less fortunate. I have seen this done at great sacrifice. Sometimes these people go into debt, or take more of it on, in order to give.........to me that is NOT hypocritical, it is simply their effort to humanity.

Many of these same people are those who: care for a neighbor's child who is too ill to go to school, take their neighbor to the grocery store, pick up trash they did not drop, bake a casserole for the ill, nurse their mother in law.........their generosity is there, it is simply not newsworthy.

It is a little hypocritical. However, humans are so ingrained with taking care of themselves, and the holiday season kind of forces us to think of those less fortunate. This happens at a time when things such as food and clothing are the most important and the hardest to come by: winter.

Actually my church maintains a food pantry to feed the needy all year round. We also go once a month to a local homeless shelter and provide a home cooked meal. It is not just a one time a year thing for us.

I don't think that they are hypocritical at all. It is the spirit of the season that makes them aware that they should help the unfortunates.

Not everyone has to act like Sister Theresa all of the time.

Christmas time is the time to give and the rest of the year is the time to think about it.
Yes, they are hypocrites disguised as angels.
