Hey there. That is sweet of you to take care of your friend's dog. It will be a big transition for you both. I have a pekingese. She is the most loving and cuddly dog ever. Like any other dog, or even person, we all have different preferences. You are going to have to test what the dog likes by trying all sorts of diets. My dog WILL NOT eat dog food. I do the rice and chicken breast thing. Treats are the same, so buy small bags and see what the dog likes. You can tell which are the favorites, and which just lay around. Some dogs are super picky, others arent. You are going to have to get aquainted with one another, learning likes and dislikes, and adapting to a new lifestyle. There are things you will recognize with time. So for now.... TRY IT ALL. Buy canned dog food, try dry food, chicken and rice, and whatever else that is dog friendly. The chicken and rice works out well because I make a huge batch and then freeze them in little ziploc bags, then microwave it when Im ready to feed her. And, I dont know of many dogs that refuse chicken :) Best of luck!

All dry dog foods meet 100% of a dog's nutrient needs by law. The choice of foods has much more to do with personal biases. For instance, some people do not like meat by-products, some do not like corn, some do not like certain preservatives, some like meat listed as the first ingredient but the bottom line is, whichever you choose, your dog will do fine. It is basically a choice of marketing gimmicks. I would avoid a raw diet, though, as veterinarians are in agreement that there is no safe way to feed raw meat and raw or cooked bones.

my pick is 11yrs old.. she ate dry dog food (pea size) for 7 yrs. I made the mistake of feeding her canned food. Now she will not touch the dry.Reason i feel it's a mistake is soft food sticks to her teeth only tiny amounts but to the point her gums got abcessed and several teeth needed pulled.. Try to keep it on dry food..Not only is it cheaper, but i have had several dogs that lived 16+yrs on same dry dog food.

Regular dog food, boiled and finely shredded chicken, no bones.......if owner had pet along time, you may experience the dog not eating well for awhile, it will miss its owner, be patient.......

Is there anyway that you can find out what your friend has been feeding him? It is better to make a food change gradually. [ if you plan on changing it ]
